train detector for dc layout

do any of you have a reliable circuit that would detect a train infrered preferred. I have been trying to get one to work. My local electronic supplier told me that the one I wastrying to biuld would not work. new to electronic componets and like to construct things myself. thanks

I take it that the guy at the electronics store was quick to criticize your work and offered no help. Radio Shack use to have "Engineeer's Mini-Notebooks" on optoelectronics circuits (part #276-5012) but they no longer sell them, at least on line. Maybe one of their stores would have one.
The best I can do recommend some books or you can e-mail me with a address to snail mail you some photo copies of circuits from my books (sorry I don't have a scanner). Click on the book title.

Rollins World Web Page show a infrared detector curcuit. Click on the type of IR emitter/detector pictured.

Consider using visible room light. IR would need a source. Try also different light detectors. This could include resistors, voltage generators, and light sensitive transistors. I plan to use the later in a circut I am working on to drive a Train order signal.
Check Kalmbach Publications for Peter Thorn's book on electronic projects. I'm not sure if it is out of print.
