Thanks to you both.

What a process! Imagine needing that calculation and the maker not putting any reference on their manual about how to go about it.

That link to Tony's trains is really helpful.

None of the decoders program a 4 digit address automatically, that is done by the command station; however, since these decoders are giving you trouble programming anyway, it is possible that when your Zephyr tries to program the three values(CV17, CV18 and CV29) to set the 4 digit address, not all of the values are getting programmed. I would first try programming the 4 digit address 2 or 3 times in a row to see if it takes, and if not then use then calculator that David linked to to caculate CV 17 and CV 18 and program them manually.

Thanks to jxtrxx...yes the 1000 Ohm resistor did the trick immediately on programming those cheapo Bachmann DCC Onboard decoders....just as you said..it may take a few attempts before the values "stick".

Yes, to tstage....they are made by Lenz

But I made a separate post here to ask this quesiton.  I've never used such an old decoder that doesn't program up to 4 digit addresses automatically.  What does this mean?

Is it that for CV 17 I enter the first 3 digits of the 4 digit address, and for CV 18 the last of the 4?

I have already set CV 29 bits so that CV 17 and 18 are functioning.
