I have just such an arrangement an LGBStainz with a powered sound tender and the difference ithe tender makes is terrific, However i have never had any problem with it shaking. At one stage the tender got out of step with the engine and kept causing it to derail on right hand curves but i was able to retune the whole thing using MTS adjustments and it has been working fine now for about a year,

The 20301 set may be from the mid 1980s or later, and that means it might have smoke but doubtful if it has sound.
Easy to add both...if you can find the LGB replacement smokestack package (about $28 and ebay is a great place to buy them--search for 'LGB smoke' and you may get lucky today!) The item you need to buy is a "all in one" drop-in smoke stack (that is, generator with metal rod) the old catalog number was 2020/3 I believe but not sure. In any event, ask the seller. You may have to dissassemble the loco to get the wires installed. If you don't want to do it, send the loco to LGBofA. PLEASE NOTE that you must go quite fast around the track to get these things to smoke well!
SOUND OPTIONS....
1) For sound, you have several options. The LGB Green Freight car 41352 plugs right into the back of the loco for chuff chuff. Also very easy to find on Ebay!
2) An LGB sound and power tender. Many to choose from--colors and options. Some come with bell and whistle sounds, be sure you are know what you are getting be fore you buy! I would recommend Paul's Authorized LGB ebay store or similar for something of this nature.
Sometimes you can get really lucky and find a Digital sound & power tender. The Digital version sounds a little more realistic than the older sound tenders. Both will do the job though!
Plus, with a power tender, your little Stainz loco will work overtime! You can plug wires from the lightiing/power sockets of the engine to the tender, and that means if you go very slow speeds your loco will never stall or "jerk" ....sometimes, without a tender behind her, Stainzy likes to shake, rattle and roll!

What Kim has had to say is 100 % correct, you can buy a smoke generator for a Stainz very cheaply but sound with this unit is another matter and it is hard to do; and even then it isn't very good, just a chuf chuf and not very good at that.
Go into ebay and buy a powered tender with sound; that is what i have and the result is terrific and this is the cheapest way to do it. If you have the patience try to wait and get a green one, they are hard to come by but if you wait long enough you will get one.
PS I have been trying to get a green powered tender without sound to go with my Sachsen for about 6 months now with only limited succes.
A lot of us started this way, I bought my first starter set in 1986 and it's still around in different forms. Highly unlikely that it's equipped for either at this moment in time, smoke units are a fairly inexpensive item, you either have to drill out the fitted stack or replace it with a factory made one. You'll have to pick power up of course but I'll leave that to someone who can remember how the Stainz strips down, it's that long since I bashed it that I can't. The best place for a sound unit is in a trailing goods wagon with its own power, very easy to do.
Cheers,
Kim
