A visit to Capt Bob Johnson
Posted by tangerine-jack on Sunday, May 15, 2005 4:05 PM
Here I go again! I just can't stop visiting you guys when I'm in town. This weekend I was in Georgetown, DE, home of Capt Bob Johnson. I stopped in for a few hours and spent a wonderful afternoon with this great guy and his lovely wife. The weather was fantastic so we ran some trains and had "church social sandwiches" on the back porch. I snapped a few shots:

Guys, let's face it, we'll get nowhere without our ladies, this is Bob's wife Dianne and my wife to be Michelle (yes the date is July 22!). I have no idea what they are talking about, but I'm sure it ain't trains!

This should end any silly discussion of "scale" and keep the missus happy! It's a good idea I'm going to have to steal, sorry Bob!

Me and the Capt enjoying the layout.

Capt Bob hard at "work"?????

The station. Right now this is the focal point of the layout. Bob has a lot of great ideas for the finished product- I can't wait to see what it will look like a year from now.

I'm sure Bob can explain the technicals better than me, but basicaly he uses stainless steel track and Command Control. The layout is roughly oval shaped and there will be trains running through the mountains soon. The "SoCal" arid look will be changed just as soon as Bob can get the plants in.

This has the makings of a real first class layout. I like the pond and waterfall, very sharp. Thanks Bob and Dianne for showing Michelle and me your railroad and fantastic "slower lower DE" hospitality!

Its always good to visit the people you meet on this forum. I dread the idea, at present, of some of you stoping by...namely because I am embarrased of what little I have. [:(] I cannot wait until I am at a point where I can invite you all!!!

Its also nice to put a face to some of the people on this forum!!!

Nice station Capt!!!! I like the platforms, I may have to get some for myself!!! Are you running on battery power?

Jack, Thanks for the pics and wish you well!!!

Later,

Capt Carrales

For those who might ask,

A church social sandwich is 1 slice ham, 1 slice cheese, 2 slices bread, that's it!

Our sandwiches really weren't that skinny, but that's how I tell Di when she gets stingy with the sandwich stuff! I want enough in there to know what I'm eating!

Flying Capt. - I'm not battery powered, just thinking about it. right now my 2 RDC's, SD-45, and 0-4-0 are either analog or trackside TE. The RS-3 and Pacific are onboard TE.

I'm still evaluating systems to see what I like best! Will probably soon put something on battery power with trackside TE mounted in battery car. No matter what system I wind up using most, I still want capacity for others to run on my railroad when they come over! Our club is going to try to schedule some play dates where some can meet at a member's layout and just run everybody's stuff!

Matt, Jack's gonna be joining you as being overrun with women!

Capt. Carrales
You shouldn't be embarrassed by your railway and you should welcome visitors. Anyone with a garden railway will appreciate what you have started and can visualize what will develop over time. Most folks would appreciate that such a project is a fine balance between time and money available; obligations; other interests; and those particular aspects of this hobby you find the most appealing. I have a fairly small garden railway and I have had a few visitors. Anyone is welcome, but visitors have to accept what I've got -- warts and all. My layout reflects five years of on-and-off effort . The main purpose of my railway is to amuse me. Fortunately, it also amuses my wife who has given me plenty of leeway, helpful suggestions, and lots of effort in the landscaping end of things.
Keep plugging away and in a few years' time you will have to refer to today's photos to remember what you started with.
