A language question...
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, February 25, 2005 12:47 PM
I will try to relate this back to trains as best I can, I have brought it to this various English Speaking assemblage because a friend of mine on another forum invented a word that I should like to see in use (and maybe even in the Oxford English Dictionary someday)...

We are united in love of the hobby, but lets see if we can change the English language just one small iota...

BOVINEFECALOMETRY

How many post on this foum are genuine Garden Railroading and which smack of BOVINEFECALOMETRY? One measures this property on the metaphorical BOVINEFECALOMETER!

Have at it!

Cappy,

I think we could measure BOVINEFECALNESS more easily on the BOVINEFECALOMETER (also known as the HEFERSCOPE).

Troy,

Do I detect some vitriol in your post? [oX)]I hope it is not directed toward anything I posted here, if so...I appologize. I depend on this forum for international corespondance...

We were discussing this word first coined in one of the political forums I frequent...

http://ericvonwade.com/community/display.asp?post_id=23799&board=1&board_name=General

I thought the word was worthy of sharing with my "overseas blokes."

The word expresses a situation where something is spoken that is hollow or overly pompous...in other words...BS.

Well Phil,

I guess that makes me a BOVINEFECALOMETRIST, while you are merely a BOVINEFECALOMEPRACTOR [:P].

Honestly, do you think this word has a chance?

Thanks Troy,
I often doubt myself when it comes to "social misteps," I was wracking my brain trying to find something "less than polite" that I might have posted. I often don't mean to do stupid things...they just seem to come so naturally to me![:D]

Have a good...is it later evening in you neck of the woods when it's mid-afternoon here?

I agree Troy, Cappy's posts are always well written and interesting. He obviously picks his subjects carefully to get as much feedback as possible. And that's exactly what we need.

Cappy,

The only shortcoming I see with "bovinefecal.........." is that it fails to properly identify the sex of the Bovine (a crucial detail). May I suggest Testabovinefecal.............? Further, can we agree that a Testabovinefecalor(er) (n.) is one who freely practices the art of Testabovinefecaling (v.) ?

If we were to adopt this proposal, both the Bovinefecalometer and the Heferscope would have the prefix Testa added.

I’m anxious to hear your thoughts on this tantalizing subject.

See guys this all gets back to my old hobby horse of different words and statements mean different things in different countries; and what can be an act of friendship can be misconstrued as an insult. I know Troy pretty well and he has a very good family life and occupation and life in general and it is unlikely that he would say anything hurtful to anyone.

So blokes lets always assume the best and treat what just about every one of the regulars say as an act of friendship.

Look at the word *** (you can delete this if you like Erik but it is not a swear word in this country) we use it all the time and it is a term of friendship. Most of the English speaking world absolutely deplore the American use of the words root and fanny, they are absolutely so rude you would get a punch in the mouth if you used them in mixed company in this country and in most English speaking countries. These very rude words you Americans use all the time and i truly think that you should stop it.you might say they are not rude words in this country but thats not the point much of what is in the American media is also broadcast internationally.

Not only do you use these rude words in mixed company but you even sing about them and i refer directly to "Take me out to the ball game" and "The theme from The Nanny.

I understand this new word of Joes quite well considering my surname; it is a super word relating to Bullsht.

Ian,

Which of the many words that have been used in this thread so far is so offensive? If anything I've written has offended anyone, I'm truly sorry, I certainly didn't mean to.
I've reviewed the thread and have found nothing that should make anyone uneasy, at least that's how I see it from an American perspective. Nothing was written about or directed at anyone else, so I, for one, am a little confused.

Rush Limbaugh used the word Feminazi on his daily radio show for over ten years before it was finally made accepted into the Engilsh language and put into the dictionary (I'm not sure if it's Oxford or Websters, maybe both). My guess is if we can get the rest of the world to start using it than it has a chance. Otherwise, it will soon be as forgotten as the actual matter which it describes.

Also I have noticed, that humor each country seems to enjoy. Here in America we have seem to be more relaxed in the rules on humor, then England or Australia. It doesn't mean better just different. The TV shows have different type of humor. Monty Python is great, but many of the people I know think it is the worst show, with no humor in it at all. BBC television sitcoms are very different as well. Haven't see Australian shows, other then Mel Gibson movies, but the folks that have visited seem to have humor closer to the British style.

But that is what makes the world go round.

Ian, I didn't see any rude words, so can you fill us in on what words in this thread have been offensive ?

And last, it is 48 degrees, partially cloudy, but no rain. We almost have dry ground outside. [8D][8D][8D][8D]

Oops, no weather on this thread, gotta go find the coffee shop. [:D]

I ,as well as Walt ,have checked this thread and don't know what you're getting at?
It is true though about different swear words in different countries. It would be a tricky thing to discuss without upsetting everyone somewhere in the world.
Kim--with the election coming up I think we should build a heferscope.Should make things clearer!!

I think "bovinefecalometry" is most appropriately used in the context of news, commentary, and opinion/editorial pieces.

While I like the gender specific "testabovinefecal..." I prefer the gender neutral "bovinefecalometry" since the purveyors of the aforementioned speech can be and are of either gender.

Incidentally, I usually measure bovinefecalometry with my patented, portable, hand-held, homemade 9 volt BOVINEFECALOMETER.

Hi Joe,
As Troy said, the only use for a Heferscope would be on (or in) a politician. I won't be much use to you over our elections, I have absolutely no time or use for Brit politcs. These views are personal you understand, our main parties are run by lieing, cheating bas***ds who promise the earth and deliver nothing, they are allowing the destruction of peoples pension rights whilst using public money to underwrite their own. They tax us to hell and back and then claim we are well off - we pay 20% basic rate tax, around 5% in national insurance (for a third rate health system & other state benefits), 17.5% Value Added Tax (just about on everything except the majority of foodstuffs), excise duty on alcohol/ tobacco/ FUEL, £120-00 per year to watch television and about the same amount to drive our cars on the road. I have to stop here because I'm getting myself into ranting mode, so excuse me if I bow out of this one because it won't make any difference to my life whoever gets in power.
Cheers,
Kim

Yes Tim, we pay a television licence fee that goes to the BBC to run their business. They employ an army of people to 'detect' licence dodgers and drag them before the courts if they don't pay. Of course the BBC use our money to fund ALL of their activities, World Service, digital etc which very few of us actually receive. I forgot to mention the 'Council Tax' where the local governing body charge each household to cover that areas activities, from schools to road cleaning to public transport upgrades etc. The only council service we use is refuse collection, we pay the council just under a £1000 per year!
Cheers,
Kim

Kim,

We are headed down the same road as you. on an income of 60,000 USD (that's about 110,000LB ?) we pay about 30% in federal income tax. That of course helps to pay for the "democratization" of the MiddleEast. Then we have state income taxes ranging from 3 to 6% depending on location. Most states also have sales taxes in the range of 5% on most purchases. There are substantial taxes for gasoline (included in the price per gallon). We pay real estate taxes on our homes and apartments. Only $2000 in some areas to as much as $12,000 - $15,000 per year in other areas, depending on location and value. Let's not forget social security (pension) taxes, about 7%. We have heavy "sin" taxes on tobacco and alcohol. There are many, many other taxes too numerous to list.

It's been estimated that the average american works the first 6 1/2 months of the year to pay for all of the taxes levied on him, both direct and hidden.

This is a completely casual estimate and could be off 10-20% either way, but you get the idea. How does this compare to your tax burden?

Walt
