Excellent Topic, Vic. Im going to make it a point to post on this one regularly to isure than new people will see it after it goes off the openning page! Also, Might I suggest adding a Bachmann 2-6-0 "Indy" to your roster, it will go well with your others since it is small and attractive (especially if ou buy it undecorated and letter it up).

My Railroad's roster consists of:
a bachmann Starter set (a 4-6-0, a combine and an observation car)with a roadname of Great Northern.
an Aristo Railbus in Southern Pacific colors
a lgb d&rg gondola
a lgb open pass. car d&spp
a recently finished solar powered loco.
They all work well for my useage rates with the exception of the solar car which hasn't been tested yet, but it will use an aristo motorblock so it should work fine.

Capt Carrales,
It isn't really solar power, unfortunately[V]. Even if I could afford panels with sufficient power I would need to connect batteries to power it in tunnels. (Beyond my skill.) It also has to be able to be controlled in the cab at the Fairplex Garden Railroad. I wish it really was true solar power, though.
I'll send you pics if you want.

2 Annies (one converted to RCS), I stock B/mann Porter (heavily weathered & detailed), 1 B/mann Climax (sound card added), I B/mann Indy (converted as in August Gr mag to bigger cab & tender, also R/C & batts), 2 heavily bashed B/mann Porters (into tender locos, no side tanks, R/C & batt.). I scratch-built Class A Climax (running on MDC motor trucks), 1scratch-built tram (streetcar, also on MDC power truck), 1 B/mann handcar, 2 scratchbuilt critters, 1 7/8th scale Plymouth diesel built from GR mag plans(running on Aristo power truck)
and the pride of the fleet, the Argyle Bantam live-steamer. (R/C, butane fired, cosmetically heavily modified to Nth American cab & scratch-built tender to hold the R/C gear)
All rolling stock is scratch-built with the exception of 5 B/mann pass. cars.
There's building info on just about all of these modifications on my website.

Hi all
my list is as follows:-
the pride of the EGR
EGR no1 0-4-0 factory modified live steam loco by Argyle in 16mm scale
named NGEGEE

EGR NO 3 a Lizzie model T loco in 16mm scale a product of the
Toenail Ridge Shortline workshops
This one runs at scale speed so a speeding snail moves faster[:)]
Phil have you got a web based picture of this unusual one.that the forum could acsses

2 x LGB stainz
1 x LGB red 4 wh deisle the boxy sort of one
1 X mighty moe (nothing to run with this one)
1 X LGB orrange deisle this one came in a set and had to have a divers weight added to make it haul a train and has had the light made directional
1 X hartland Mach this one is dirt cheep and a good runner but lookes a bit small when compared to the LGB
1 X Bachman 4-6-0 this one away being converted to 16mm scale
1 x big hustler[censored] think has never ran well out side has old style motor block with brass wheels
1 X LGB mallet the older green one
And a mottley colection of rolling stock to suit the above locomotives

You will note the overload of small locomotives I just happen to prefer those
and it will stay that way unless some one builds an NZR streamline K class locomotive that will get round R1 which will not happen so the small loc policy is safe

Still scratching my head trying to come up with a name for my railroad - it's basically going to be a logging / mining (most likely coal on the latter) themed 3-ft gauge line. Prototype inspirations are Cass (Mower Lumber Co.) & Ely-Thomas Lumber Co.in WVA, & the East Branch & Lincoln in NH; will probably implement some practices from all 3, plus a little freelancing. Still also trying to decide if the "location" is going to be WVA or NH (a recent trip to Cass this past summer may be tilting me towards the former). At any rate, here's current motive power roster:

2 Bachmann Shays (1 Ely-Thomas style, 1 Pardee & Curtain style)

1 Bachmann Climax

1 Bachmann Heisler

1 Bachmann 45-ton GE siderod diesel

1 Bachmann 4-4-0 Centennial

1 Bachmann 0-4-0T (side-tank version)

1 LGB Hallo Rail Truck

& my newest acquisition:

1 Accucraft 3-cylinder live-steam Shay!

The Bachmann Ely Thomas Shay, Climax, & Heisler are all DCC-equipped & have Phoenix Bigsound 2K2 sound boards installed. The GE diesel, Centennial, Pardee-Curtain Shay, & Hallo Rail truck are also DCC equipped. The Accucraft Shay will eventually get radio control installed; I just got it about a week ago & am currently puzzling out exactly how to mount the servos for RC operation.

Tuscarora Railroad #1 "Allison"
Accucraft Ruby rebuild, modeled after the Lahaina, Kaanapali & Pacific Railroad in Hawaii. That locomotive was rebuilt in 1970 from a 1940s vintage Porter 0-4-0. It still runs on the railroad today as a 2-4-0

Tuscarora Railroad #2
Bachmann 2-6-0 kitbash based on the East Tennessee and Western North Carolina 2-6-0 #2

Bachmann 2-8-0 kitbash of a freelance design, using features common to East Broad Top locomotives such as the front pilot and tender frame. This locomotive took 1st place in the "Steam Locomotive" category at the Garden Railway Convention in Denver.

Click on the banner below to go to detailed descriptions of their construction. (Click on "Motive Power.")

I've also got two Roundhouse live steam locos that I've stripped down to the bare bones and rebuilt to suit.

More on this loco can be found at:
http://www.mylargescale.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=19428

TRR #2 and #3 are battery power, using RCS throttles. Both have batteries in the tender, with an auxilliary power jack on the rear of the tender should run times longer than 2 hours be desired. TRR#1 and the two Roundhouse locos are live steam. TRR#1 is manually controlled at this time, but runs quite smoothly and fairly slowly. The two Roundhouse locos will crawl along at a snail's pace, pulling a string of 5 or 6 cars without difficulty. At the Garden Railway Convention, I had the 2-6-0 under steam for 3 1/2 hours one evening.

Waiting in the wings:

Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania/PHMC collection
Accucraft Ruby kitbash into Tuscarora Valley #2, an 0-4-4 Forney that operated on a narrow gauge railroad one valley east of the East Broad Top RR.

FEBT collection
Bachmann 4-6-0 kitbash into EBT #11 2-6-2

Bachmann Heisler kitbash into a logging loco that served the lumbering operations near the East Broad Top RR.

Later,

Hi wa1lbk
Working on your loco roster
you don't need a Railroad name you need a company name for the logging company
Eg WA Timber Mining & Light Railway Co
The name says where it is WA West Australia and what we do get wood and minerals and we have a light railway as well.
If you substitute your State or County even your street or town name
You could even use your last name for a real personal touch that will give you possable tempory name untill you come up with a better one
more suited too your line, it will sound better than the garden trains at least
That will give you something to think about[:D]

No need to describe any further, I understand totally. I feel the same way, but vice-versa. I model USA style since it triggers that same feeling you mention for me. All a matter of personal preference and personal tastes.

John Busby & Capt. Carrales

Thanks for the words of support and encouragement.

Actually, I was not really feeling sorry for myself, but having a little "tongue-in-cheek" attempt at being humorous.

OK, I admit I can get a bit sensitive about justifying whether I really NEEDED that Garratt which cost as much as a medium sized second-hand car, but when that happens then I tell myself -- yes, you did NEED it. End of discussion.

Oops escaped before I had finished.
as I was saying how the [censored] I am suposed to get it round curves that it was never meant to go round on a line never built for locomotives that sort of size.
Any thoughts of something smaller in the way of an EAR locomotive and red guards van I am told they where red but have nothing for referance.
Closer to you than me any assistance would be welcome SWMBO wants an EAR train and I dont want to start trouble by not having one .

My roster is mainly B'mann 4-6-0's with rebuilt drive trains and one or two scratchbuilt, freelance engines. Since I model in 1:24 scale the Big Hauler locos are really too large (1:20 scale). However, I've just finished bashing the B'mann Indy 2-6-0 per the recent GR article. The result is very satisfying indeed. And based on recent postings about this engine, it seems as though it may prove to be very robust as well. I've also looked at the possibilities for future bashing and can see that this model should lend itself nicely to making a 2-8-0 Connie and a 2-6-2 Prairie, maybe even a 2-8-2 Mike, without too much effort. So it looks as though I'm going to be standardizing on the Indy for my motive power.

Hi John Busby

The Garratt is ex South African Railways narrow gauge (2 foot) sold to Schinznacher Baumshulbahn (Tree Nursery) in Switzerland. They did a magnificent restoration job and it is now a deep burgundy colour with yellow pin striping. It really is a work of art.

I have pictures of my model trains at various displays around my home town and also of the real 2 foot narrow gauge that runs a few miles from my home. This is the "Apple Express" which has the same Garratt (class NGG16) but in black livery.

You (and anyone else out there) are welcome to contact me for pictures. I have a vast collection in high resolution JPEG. Get my e-mail address from my profile and let's arrange to send you some pics as attachments. Unfortunately I have to do it this way as I do not have a website.

Cheers

P.S. I hate those smiley things ... don't want to use them !!!

I've already been thinking somewhat along the lines of our suggestions for my RR's name, John. When I used to model PRR in O scale, my railroad's name was "Pennsylvania RR, Albion division" (I live on Albion St.). Trying to come up with a name that will imply the railroad as perhaps being a little more "common-carrier" oriented (I run both a full passenger train & a mixed train as part of the operating schedule I'm developing), rather than simply "XXX" Mining & Logging Co. RR, for example. I've thought about using the names of a couple of adjoining streets as well - since naming the terminal towns was a common practice, "Albion, Bedford & Chesworth" is one that I'm considering (coincidentally, it would be easy to do "A,B, & C RR" from decal lettering sets!). Got a few others in mind as well; although right now, biggest consideration is getting construction started on an outdoor line before the weather starts getting cold here in the Northeast US. Thanks for your input, anyway! :)

Hi wa1lbk
The running of other than mineral an timber trains was in the light railway
bit.
I dont know what the US equivelant term for it is
basicaly a railway built to a lower standard than the big companies have too
In the UK and early Aus railways coverd by the light railways act
a law that allowed for lower standards on rural railways ect a lot of industreal
and narrow gauge railways built under british law at home and colonies
used that act of parlement.
any way time for me end this bit starting to wander away from the topic[:D]
