Bachmann sells unpainted rolling stock which includes trucks and metal wheels. They come in a gray color and are all under $40.

Windows, people doors, clearstory roof windows. Freight doors (as on baggage cars) are much "easier" to make than people doors, much less detail. Solid plank walls with no (or very few) windows are quicker than carving all the window detail.

What makes a passenger car so much more difficult to build?
The baggage car will be "easiest," because of the relatively few (if any) windows. Note that I put the word "easiest" in quotes. On the difficulty scale, no passenger car is a cakewalk.
Good luck, and post photos as you progress.

I just got the plans on this website to build passenger cars. They there are plans for combines, coaches, and baggage cars. Which would be the "easiest" to make? Also, does anyone have any pictures of passenger cars the built themselves?
