Timmeyd, The grate you are refering to in my understanding was a feature designed on proto types to break up any hot cinders that might catch something on fire as they leave the smoke stack. If I'm wrong please correct me forum members.

Tim,
A 2028D is a DSP&PRR Mogul, built 1988-90, the D designates a smoke generator.
There is a whole bunch of LGB Mogul experts hanging out at http://www.lgbmrrc.com/forum/

What is a 2028B, I'm not sure that i know it, the grate on my Stainz liftsout so you can get at the smoke generating gear.

Just joined the forum here and am a newbie to G Scale trains. Please let me know if there is another one that is better suited to questions concerning both L.G.B. and Bachmann steam locos. I just purchased a L.G.B 2028D. I think I got it at a fair price. I am curious as to the history of this L.G.B model. I gather it is not made any longer? I am curious as to why the top of the smoke stack as a perferated grate (it looks like). Any information about this model would be greatly appreciated.
Again, please let me know if there is another forum that would be better suited for questions about G scale steam locos.
Thanks
timmyd
