well the cabin made it back finally, If any would like to see pictures let me know and I will e-mail them to you. Keep in mind it was built under the "schools" time table. We have a combined time of 5 hours in itI would have much rather have done a few thing differently. The cedar shakes were hand split though. All the log were cut by hand by my 11yr old daughter with a coping saw, I notch them using a miter box(powered). The chinking or crack filler is joint compound for drywall, this is one thing I would change and was only done due to time restraints. I would probably use masonry mortar for outside durability. All and all a fun learning experence for my daughter and I.

My old employer lives in a 3000 square foot log home. Absolutely georgeous! It was used in a movie filmed here called "Red Team". Never saw it but I think it was a made for TV movie. Winnipeg has become a hot spot for film crews from the US. I'm familiar with log construction and love the look. When the family and I move out of the city we will be building a Timber Frame home. The plans originally were for a log home but I liked the floor plan. This will be our last home. On five acres of land so a serious garden rr will be in order. Ever see the movie "Grey Owl" with Pierce Brosnan? Grey Owl originally had a cabin in Riding Mountain National Park here in Manitoba. I want to build his log cabin this year for my pond...just for fun. Later eh...Brian.

Smcgill and bman, i will take some pics when it makes it back home from school. My daughter had to go to bed early so I ended up finishing it on my own. I'm pleased with the results for the time frame in which we had to build it
in. The cabin is now better suited for inside due to my time restrictions, I had to use fast setting drywall compound for the chinking( mortar like crack filler in between the logs). She and I would like to finish it by adding a door and a chimney.

Still have my email??? Send me some pics. Sounds like a great project. Shingles and all....wow that's ambitious. My son took a building I made for him to school. It is a "Titanic Museum" since he is an avid Titanic fan. Next thing I knew his teacher was recruiting me for a woodworking project. Ooooops, I'll have to watch what he takes next time. Just kidding. Hey All, My 11 yr old had this project to build a log cabin for school so I decided we would build it in 1:20 scale so I er we could use it later on the rail road later. All the logs are sticks from the yard which I had her cut with a coping saw. I then notched them with my miter box. I even hand split a bunch of Cedar shakes for the roof. Turned another school project into something fun for a change.
