Kevin, Most of the vehicles are made by Corgi and actually come weathered, but you can "grunge" 'em a bit more. I find them at a store called Tuesday Morning usually for only around $15.00 each. For the chain, I pick it up at my hobby shop in the model ship section, and if I want to use "steel cable" I pick up fishing line leaders at Walmarts. I hope this helps.
Jon - thank you for the reply and thanks for posting some great pictures of your work. I really like the job you've done, because another idea I have been tossing around in my head was to try and make military type cars/layout myself. I am an admitted history buff, especially WWII & the Civil War, but I was playing with ideas in my head for making a Civil War era type train. Just another one of the several ideas I have, with no money to back it! A recent train show here had a layout of the Connecticut Valley at the start of WWII, showing munitions factories and supply lines. It was very well done and had a great storyline to read along with all the stops on the display. I should have taken some pictures to post here.
Either way I love seeing people's custom pics to help get ideas, but to also appreciate their hard work and creativity. Nice job, Jon.

I've been getting into the DOD train myself and picked up 3 Shermans, halftrack,4jeeps, personnel carriers, and a MASH helicopter at YORK and its starting to come along. I also got quite a few army GIZ both American and Germans. Thinking of doing a small battle ground scene?
