Lionel Southern Crescent Noise

Once again, after replacing the brushes, the trian ran great for about...10 loops. Then the growling started. Commutator is cleaned, everything lubed that can be lubed, ???? Help?

Are these trains from this era just simply not up to snuff? Thanks, Jake

I say over lube it. I just fixed up an MPC 4-4-2 engine from the 70"s. It hadnt been run for 30 years. Dry as a bone. I kept oiling and greasing and now runs great. Grease the gears up good. Oil all the wheels. If it has an oil hole on the motor put a few drops in there. Clean the wheels really well. Then run it and run it. It will smooth out.

Hit the lube pretty darn good, no noise at all now. Unfortunately, the engine had a small spill, nothing broken, but now the chugging noise has disappeared. Anyone know what might have happened? Thanks, Jake

The tether wire for the SOS may have gotten broken in the spill. Make sure it is still attached inside the tender and at the switch near the smoke unit in the loco. I would also put some electrical tape on the bottom of the circuit board in the tender. It was held with foam which crumbles with age and allows it to short on the metal tender frame!
