Electro coupler problem on a Santa Fe Northern
Posted by Wizard Toys on Saturday, November 11, 2006 1:33 PM

Hi,

I seem to have developed a problem with the electro coupler on my Lionel 38055 Santa Fe Northern. Whenever it passes over a switch the coupler opens! I've tried re-setting the locomotive in program mode - entering the loco number "74" in this case, everything seems to set correctly but the problem persists. Living in the UK it's not too easy getting to a dealer so just wondered if any one had any suggestions.

Yeah try pitting one of these...1.0µF 50V  Non-Polarized Capacitor across the leads of the ectro couple where it connects to the board..  This prevents some issue that caude the coupler to open.

I concur with Marty's fix, I've had to do this on two engines that've passed through my hands.  Make sure you use NON-POLARIZED.  A polarized capacitor can/will explode.

Hi,

I had the same problem on an MTH Berkshire that I converted to TMCC I was advised to add a nonpolarized cap. This fixed the problem and one year latter its still working correctly
