...well, among other things, I'm pretty sure I found them offered on Lionel's website. Could be wrong about that. But that's what Im remembering...

AC Gilbert for a time after WW2 made O and S scale lockons, since I have a few of these and some prewar 3/16ths O guage Flyer I know they work well on both S & O track.

K-line made an 0/027 and S lockon but I don't think Lionel ever did unless it was after Lionel aquired some of K-line's stuff.

...Lionel has made a new universal lockon, this time designed for both O/O27 and S gauge...

I'd like to see a picture of that.

The type UTC is a prewar lock-on that was, like many other items, carried over into the first few years of the postwar era. It is designed so that it may be clipped to both O/O27 track, and Standard Gauge track. In  the prewar era, these were also the most predominant gauges, so it makes sense that a company which, for a tone, was producing both, would make a universal piece of equipment for these two gauges. In modern times, Lionel has made a new universal lockon, this time designed for both O/O27 and S gauge. However, no postwar or prewar lockon made by Lionel has ever been made to fit S gauge.

That sounds to me like an OTC. I have a pair of them that came with my twin-bin dump car to use as an activator because the car is too long for a regular uncoupling track(even though it works on my UCS). You could hook one of them up and use it as an uncoupler.

Ben, I am in agreement with you on this but don't have Standard Gauge track to test it on. I have been going through some of the old postwar & prewar track & stuff that I have & this is one of the many items I have found. Also found a piece that clips on for a possible remove-able or add-on uncoupling section for prewar Lionel with electrical uncouplers on the trucks, the piece has two rails and two clips and fits between the center & outside rails, about two&a half inches long.[?]

I believe that that's a universal lockon meant for O and Standard gauge track.

I wouldn't expect it to fit, since Lionel never made S-gauge track.

Does any one know about the old Lionel power lockon type UTC made around post-war time? It has a swivel piece with a rivot close to the center. I know one side allows you to hook up to O gauge or 027 track, the other side I tried on S gauge track but was off by over 1/8 of an inch from being tight and slips right off S gauge track.
