The type UTC is a prewar lock-on that was, like many other items, carried over into the first few years of the postwar era. It is designed so that it may be clipped to both O/O27 track, and Standard Gauge track. In the prewar era, these were also the most predominant gauges, so it makes sense that a company which, for a tone, was producing both, would make a universal piece of equipment for these two gauges. In modern times, Lionel has made a new universal lockon, this time designed for both O/O27 and S gauge. However, no postwar or prewar lockon made by Lionel has ever been made to fit S gauge.

I'd like to see a picture of that.

K-line made an 0/027 and S lockon but I don't think Lionel ever did unless it was after Lionel aquired some of K-line's stuff.

AC Gilbert for a time after WW2 made O and S scale lockons, since I have a few of these and some prewar 3/16ths O guage Flyer I know they work well on both S & O track.
Are these the ones you are asking about:http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-Lionel-Prewar-UTC-Universal-Lockon-O-Standard-Gauge-/112438622103?hash=item1a2ddd3797:g:qqYAAOSwrfVZPH~4
...well, among other things, I'm pretty sure I found them offered on Lionel's website. Could be wrong about that. But that's what Im remembering...
