I don't see "The Station Agent" listed. Off beat, but we love it. Recently has been on TV several times, and is available on DVD. Check it out.[:D]

This has got to be the best train movie ever. Litterally just got done watching it for the first time.

Was it on cable TV? If so, what channel?

Have been watching the tribute marathon to Don Knotts on TV Land this weekend and one episode had a scene where Barney was chasing a hobo away from the campfire that was next to a double line.

Not sure if the lingo above is correct but maybe a double mainline?

Anyways, Barney found a briefcase full of cash next to the track that some bank robber had thrown out of the window of the passenger train he was riding when the robber felt the heat getting close.

No trains where shown in this scene which was kind of a bummer.

RE: The Titfield Thunderbolt

Plot Summary for
The Titfield Thunderbolt (1953)
The residents of a small English village are about to lose their ancient railroad. They decide to rescue it by running it themselves, in competition with the local bus company.

Summary written by Blair Stannard {stannard@sonetis.com}

When British Railways announce the closure of the Titfield to Mallingford branch line a group of local residents make a bid to run it themselves, backed by a monied member of the community who is attracted by the complete lack of licensing hours on trains. Unfortunately the local bus company starts to use methods that can hardly be seen as fair competition, to the extent that the whole project is threatened.

Watched Godzilla's Revenge with the kids today - about a kid who is alone most of the time and dreams of going to monster island and meeting Minilla and Godzilla etc. Anyway, the kid lives right next to a switch yard and his dad works (apparently 24 hours a day) switching cars with some kind of diesel engine. The kid talks to his dad who is in the cab a couple times and at one point the dad stops the engine and jumps down to help his kid. Lots of industrial stuff in the background and tons of real freight cars etc, but just in a few scenes. Most of the monster stuff looked like it was actualy footage from Son of Godzilla and Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster to me. No Tokyo stomping or model trains in the movie.

I just checked = it's not out on dvd or vhs right now. Maybe it's out on bootleg somewhere, but I don't buy boots.

How about The Titfield Thunderbolt? Anybody seen it? It's an old Ealings comedy and sounds very good!

I don't believe "Emperor of the North" has been released as a DVD yet. I have it on VHS--bought a good number of years ago at a train show.

Hey Ya'll

I've never seen Emporer of The North. Where can I find it on DVD.

Also, the 1930's movie Silver Streak with the Pioneer Zephyer is one I'd like to see. Can this be found on DVD too?

Yep, a great film - no doubt about it. I like Marty Robbins' version of that song, but I wonder how it would have sounded if Haggard had done it? The Hag is a big train nut, too.

Just finished watching "Emperor of the North" for the umpteenth time. No question about it in my mind--it is the best and most realistic railroad movie made to date. Not for the squeamish, to be sure, but for realistic railroading action this film has no peers. Heck, I even rank the theme song--"A Man and a Train"--sung by Marty Robbins, as one of my favorite railroad songs of all time.

Under Seige 2 is set on a train and has some really interesting stuff. Also, the climax of Broken Arrow is set on a train.

The best EVER is Butch Cassidy & the Sundance kid. Newman and Redford are awesome, the story is great--academy award, and lots of shots of the the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad in it. That Railroad is awesome. I didn't have time for the train ride on my honeymoon a few years back, but I walked the roundhouse, museum and walked and drove along parts of the line and made a stop in Silverton. The highway is A WHITE-KNUCKLER called the million Dollar highway. I take mountain roads over 60 mph, but this had me doing 15-20 in parts out of necessity.

Anyway Best movie for train lovers ever!

There was an old thread on tv shows with toy trains. For movies, I'll ad the recent The Legend of Zorro, which had a cool steam train in it.

Seen the Adam's Family. Great movie. Haven't seen that Aflac commercial, though.

Don't forget to look for the new AFLAC comercial with the duck engineer and he is coming on a maiden tied to the tracks, he flies to throw the switch to save the maiden but gets hit with his own engine and you see lots o feathers. Good train commercial?

Petticoat Junction was the very first TV show that I ever remember watching as a very small child. I couldn't have been anymore than 3 years old. Back then I appreciated it for the train. Nowadays, I appreciate it for the train and the babes! Especially Lori Saunders (the brunette). [tup] [:D]

"Some Like It Hot" was the movie I have seen most recently with trains in it.

An episode of the cancelled Sci-fi TV show "Firefly" was the most recent show I've seen with trains in it.

Thanks Netflix.

Another good movie has Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor going cross country on a passenger train robbery.
Don't know if you will like this one but how about the sitcom Petticoat Junction from the 60's.

My brother has a copy of, Emperor of the North. On a trip back to MN a couple weeks ago, I finally got a chance to see it. It may be, the best "train" movie ever made! There isn't a single scene that doesn't take place within spittin distance of a railroad track. I walked away with a new appreciation for the riggers of "old school" railroading.
