Seen any good Train Movies Lately?
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, February 21, 2006 6:34 PM
Hey Ya'll

Any one seen any good train movies lately, or movies that had trains in them?

I saw two.

One was "Fried Green Tomatoes" based on Fannie Flags novel "Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe. There are lots of good train sceanes in them. In the beginning, a character named Buddy, gets run over by a huge steam locomotive. And lots of train action after that too.

Another was "Stand By Me". It was okay, but ont as good as Fried Green Tomatoes. Stand By Me is basically a Train Movie, though it's not meant to be. Almost in every sceane you see a Railroad Track.

Fried Green Tomatoes is a good movie based in a fictional town called Whitsle Stop Alabama. It would be a good movie without the trains too. A must for train fans. The DVD can be bought a Walmart of Walmart.com

Stand By Me would be terrible without the trains, but it is pretty good with them. This DVD can also be purchased at Walmart or on Walmart.com

Please Share any Movies that you have seen that are about trains or have trains in them.

All three mentioned are GREAT train flicks. I really like Fried Green Tomatoes, even though it's considered a "chick flick." That prewar setting is perfect.

It's on Turner Classic Movies ? I didn't expect that to be on there for another 50 or so years. I'm watching my DVD copy of the movie as I am typing.

I have the Great Locomotive Chase. It's pretty good considering its a Disney movie.

Never did see that Pee Wee's Big Adventure though.

Another good one is a more recent one by Disney called "Iron Will". Based on a Boy named Will living in a Depression Era town that's only there because of the Railroad, who enters a Dog Race to save his family's farm. Lots of steam action in it.

All the movies listed were good, but, IMO, the absolute best train movie ever made is "The Train" with Burt Lancaster. Not only is there constant steam train activity, it is also a great action flick set during World War II.

One of my picks would be "The General" with Buster Keaton. I love the scene where the herorine helps Keaton feed the engine with wood.

My brother has a copy of, Emperor of the North. On a trip back to MN a couple weeks ago, I finally got a chance to see it. It may be, the best "train" movie ever made! There isn't a single scene that doesn't take place within spittin distance of a railroad track. I walked away with a new appreciation for the riggers of "old school" railroading.

If you like musicals try The Harvey Girls, the year is around 1946, it may sound like a chick flic but is not, it is about the Sante Fe Railroad and the motels along the Sante Fe.
Another good movie has Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor going cross country on a passenger train robbery.
Don't know if you will like this one but how about the sitcom Petticoat Junction from the 60's.

"Some Like It Hot" was the movie I have seen most recently with trains in it.

An episode of the cancelled Sci-fi TV show "Firefly" was the most recent show I've seen with trains in it.

Thanks Netflix.

Petticoat Junction was the very first TV show that I ever remember watching as a very small child. I couldn't have been anymore than 3 years old. Back then I appreciated it for the train. Nowadays, I appreciate it for the train and the babes! Especially Lori Saunders (the brunette). [tup] [:D]

Don't forget to look for the new AFLAC comercial with the duck engineer and he is coming on a maiden tied to the tracks, he flies to throw the switch to save the maiden but gets hit with his own engine and you see lots o feathers. Good train commercial?

There was an old thread on tv shows with toy trains. For movies, I'll ad the recent The Legend of Zorro, which had a cool steam train in it.

The best EVER is Butch Cassidy & the Sundance kid. Newman and Redford are awesome, the story is great--academy award, and lots of shots of the the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad in it. That Railroad is awesome. I didn't have time for the train ride on my honeymoon a few years back, but I walked the roundhouse, museum and walked and drove along parts of the line and made a stop in Silverton. The highway is A WHITE-KNUCKLER called the million Dollar highway. I take mountain roads over 60 mph, but this had me doing 15-20 in parts out of necessity.

Anyway Best movie for train lovers ever!

Under Seige 2 is set on a train and has some really interesting stuff. Also, the climax of Broken Arrow is set on a train.

Just finished watching "Emperor of the North" for the umpteenth time. No question about it in my mind--it is the best and most realistic railroad movie made to date. Not for the squeamish, to be sure, but for realistic railroading action this film has no peers. Heck, I even rank the theme song--"A Man and a Train"--sung by Marty Robbins, as one of my favorite railroad songs of all time.

Yep, a great film - no doubt about it. I like Marty Robbins' version of that song, but I wonder how it would have sounded if Haggard had done it? The Hag is a big train nut, too.
