i'm planing on using lionel o guage tube track, due to price mainly.
Is the Atlas turntable compatible with the tube stuff?
How dosse it look table top mounted, or is better to cut a hole and sink it in?

You should have no problems using the Atlas turntable with tubular track. Just make sure the insides of the rails align. I think the turntable is only designed for table top mounting.

The Atlas TT is 24". As long as the wheelbase is less than that, the engine will fit. I don't believe that anything bigger than a Railking 4-8-4 would fit-- I know that mine will(wheelbase is 23"+). The TT is meant for mounting on a tabletop, and must be absolutly flat across the 25+ in.

I would recommend that you save your money and wait until you can get a better turntable.

we can run our Railking 4-6-6-4 Challenger or Lionel A-A /A-B F-3's on ours, no problem.
