THE SPIRIT OF 76
53 WORDS

  1. In 1974, (FUNDIMENSIONS) put out a one sheet, four page (FLYER) announcing the new (SPIRIT) of 76 (COMMEMORATIVE) Series of (LIONEL) rolling stock.
  2. Included in the initial offering were the brand new (STAR-SPANGLED) U36B diesel, which replicated the paint scheme created by the (SEABOARD) System, and matching No. 6-7600 (PORTHOLE) caboose.
  3. The first (THREE) of the eventual (THIRTEEN) boxcars in the series were the 6-7601 (DELAWARE), 6-7602 (PENNSYLVANIA) and 6-7603 New (JERSEY).
  4. They were joined the next year by (FOUR) more.  The No’s 6-7604 (GEORGIA), 6-7605 (CONNECTICUT), 6-7606 (MASSACHUSETTS) and 6-7607 (MARYLAND).
  5. Those four were (UNCATALOGED) the year before their official release, 1975, just as the remaining eight (STATE) cars were in 75-76.  The Nos. 6-7608 South (CAROLINA), 6-7609 New (HAMPSHIRE), 6-7610 (VIRGINIA), 6-7611 New (YORK), 6-7612 (NORTH) Carolina and 6-7613 (RHODE) Island finished this impressive set.
  6. (NOBODY) seems to be 100% positive why the No. 6-7610 tends to command a (HIGHER) price than the other twelve (BOXCARS) while being reported as only slightly (MORE) scarce.
  7. The Spirit of (SEVENTY-SIX) series weren’t the only pieces of rolling stock to fly the (FLAG) in the modern era.  Uncataloged in 1989 and cataloged in 1991 were the Nos. 19516 George (WASHINGTON), 19517 (CIVIL) War and 19518 (MAN) on the (MOON) boxcars, each of which displayed a flag with the correct number of (STARS) for the era (REPRESENTED).
  8. The No. 6-8559 (NORFOLK) and Western GP-9 (DIESEL) and matching No. 6-9170 caboose were available in 1975 as part of set No. 6-1584, the “N & W Spirit of (AMERICA)” freight.
  9. Sadly, the beautiful No. 6-8568 (PREAMBLE) Express F-3 and No. 6-8570 (LIBERTY) Special Alco FA diesels did not head sets in the 1975 Lionel catalog.
  10. The (RED-WHITE-AND-BLUE) also looked magnificent on the No. 6-8665 B & A GP-9 diesel which bore the name (JEREMIAH) O’Brien on it’s flanks.  Both the geep and the matching No. 6-9176 N5c (CABOOSE) were uncataloged in 1976.
  11. We’ll wrap up our look at the (PATRIOTIC) cars of the late twentieth (CENTURY) by highlighting two more cars, both uncataloged.
  12. The No. 6-9076 (WE-THE-PEOPLE) caboose was the only cabin car of the (BICENTENNIAL) era to use an SP type body rather than an N5c.
  13. Lastly, you had to visit Lionel’s (VISITOR’S) Center to purchase the No. 6-19944 “(MAGICAL) Tour” (TANK) car.

Trains, trains, wonderful trains.  The more you get, the more you toot!  Big Smile
