In addition to the tools that KRM suggested, you would also want to have a pair of the proper wheel cups. That worn gear is a very common problem.
I suggest replacing the thrust bearing (41-8) and the lower armature shaft bearing when you do the gear.
I did one on my 2343 I think. I know I did one one time. But it has to be at least 5 years ago. Seems it wasn't that hard of a job but don't remember the details.

My Lionel 56 needs the worm gear located on the axle below the motor replaced. Looks like a project. Anyone ever do that? Must be somewhat common as repo 41-12 gear are easily available.
