Replacing a Lionel 41-12 worm gear on Lionel's motorized units

My Lionel 56 needs the worm gear located on the axle below the motor replaced. Looks like a project. Anyone ever do that? Must be somewhat common as repo 41-12 gear are easily available.

You will need a wheel puller to remove the wheel from the axle and a wheel press to replace the wheel after you replace the worm gear. You will also need to clock the wheels for the drive rods.
Will be much harder to do without the correct service tools.

I did one on my 2343 I think. I know I did one one time. But it has to be at least 5 years ago. Seems it wasn't that hard of a job but don't remember the details.

Thanks for the info. I have no wheel pullers and I assume the gear is also pressed on. Think I better farm this out. Don't want to break anything.

In addition to the tools that KRM suggested, you would also want to have a pair of the proper wheel cups.

That worn gear is a very common problem.

I suggest replacing the thrust bearing (41-8) and the lower armature shaft bearing when you do the gear.
