Something weird is going on with passwords/logons
Posted by LittleTommy on Sunday, March 13, 2016 9:39 AM

Last night I found that there was a new Bob's Train Box and I could not access it unless I changed my password.

However, when I tried to log in on this forum, I had to use my OLD PASSWORD and it did not recognize the new password.

I am not super TECH aware, but it makes me wonder if some malware has taken over the main site. I can't send a message to customer service unless I use the NEW PASSWORD, so if some malware has taken over the main site, anything I send to the Powers That Be might be routed to the malignant forces.

It seems really odd that I would have to change my password for part of the website but not all of it, and with no advance warning as well.

I sure as heck will not order ANYTHING from Kalmbach until I am sure that it is safe.

I had the same issue when I went to watch Bob's Train Box. Even though I was logged into the website, the BTB video would not show up until I logged in again, and it refused to accept my old password. Ended up entering a new password, and all is well. Very odd. - James

Same here; couldn't watch BTB until I changed password and logged in with the new one. Same at home or from work. Now that I changed it I can watch from both.

Interesting.  Tonight, I tried to log on several times - no  luck.  The logon screen was not the usual screen.  Was a tall rectangular pop up looking thing that only responded to a click on the red 'login' bar.

I opened up the forum, read a few of the threads, then tried to log in again.

This time, succcess.  This logon pop up looked different, too.  Was a horizontal rectangular box.

I can go thru the logon process but it still won't let me see it or leave a comment that it's not working.

Not wanting to complain but it seems like more problems with this since they upgraded to this new web host or what ever you call it.

The BTB 61 log in seems to have the problem.  I changed my password and have had no trouble since.

The company is migrating data from one server to another server (with new software) one publication at a time. This may go one for another week or so. You will need to log in with your account number, and it may bump you out again after to you leave the site. I was logged in Friday, but can't get back in myself, so I can't access BTB 61 either (I don't have a subscriber account number, but a password that it doesn't want to let me use – nor offers a chance to change)! Sorry for any inconvenience.

There are definitely still some issues with the site.  I have reset my password and cannot access any subscriber features.  I have renewed my subscription, was billed for it, but still the sight doesn't recognize my account info, address, or email/password.  I've tried calling twice but both times was on hold for 10 minutes so I gave up.  This is not the CTT/Kalmbach customer service experience I've come to know over the past few years and it's becoming quite disappointing.

Joe.... Kalmbach IT Department has not been good for the last 5-6 years from our vantage point of the CTT forum.  Needless to say the majority of us in Construction Marketing are pushing the limits of the on-line experience so I have a difficult time understanding Kalmbach on-line strategy.

I couldn't log in today, despite numerous tries.  I e-mailed Bob Keller and Kalmbach customer support.  Finally, as you can see, I was able to log in this evening.

I couldn't log in again this morning.  I have been using two different browsers on three different computers; and just now I experimented with enabling and disabling cookies, in response to a suggestion by Becky James at Kalmbach, with however no change in behavior.

However, I discovered that I can reliably log in if I leave the "Keep me logged in" box checked.  And I can never log in if I uncheck the box, as I had been doing.  It seems actually to be a "Let me log in" box, not just a "Keep me logged in" box, although, once I log in, I find I can close and reopen the forum and remain logged in.

It seems to me that, if the box won't allow logging in at all unless checked, it might as well not be shown when one is clearly intending to log in--unchecking it is not really an option.

I noticed that the "Keep me logged in" box now does not keep me logged in.  It seems to have become exclusively a "Let me log in" box.

it's a strange just certain folks have problems. I had a problem getting in to the Bob's blob for a couple of days but since then I have had no problem or any other problem. sometimes wonder if it could be setting in your computer/laptop/tablet etc.

That's possible; but, as I noted above, I've tried different computers, browsers, and internet settings with no apparent effect.  On the other hand, the strange behavior seems to vary with time and with who you are.

By the way, has anyone else noticed that checking or unchecking the box changes things?

Bob,

I also received an email from Becky James and her troubleshooting was 50% of the solution.  I tried to change the password as she recommended but that didn't work.  What worked: when trying to access Subscriber Extras such as BTB, there is a button labled "Find my Subscription."  After clicking on that, I entered my subscription account number (provided by Becky), zip code, and email address, and clicked submit.  I then reloaded my page and that worked on my Microsoft Surface tablet.  However, I had to log out and then log back in using my laptop after completing those steps.  I have noticed the "Keep me logged in" box, but I have always kept that checked so I'm not sure if that factored into my solution.  I would recommend you use the "Find my subscription" as it worked for me.

I think I'll leave well-enough alone and stay with the workaround that I have, as long as it continues to work.  But thanks for the suggestion, anyway.

I've been un-checking the 'keep me logged in' box and was unable to log in today.  After reading this thread, I tried leaving the 'keep me logged in' box checked.  Worked that time around.

I tried un-checking the 'keep me logged in' box and was unable to log in today as well.

This site and their software suck. Not much more one can say. Zip it!

I have had no problems logging in but even with the 'keep me logged in' box checked I am having to log in each time I come to the site.

Roy, can you log in if you uncheck the box?

Hi Bob,

Nope. I had to check the box. Otherwise it just let me onto the site as an observer. Tried this a few times to make sure. Did this on my PC with Chrome.

Interesting - on the iPAD there is not a log-out link so I could not log-out and check it there. Today was the first day when on the iPAD (my normal use lately) it did not force me to log in when I accessed the site.

When I posted my comment on this thread yesterday I was using the iPAD. BTW - the iPAD is still logged in, but I had to log in to connect the PC.

Regards, Roy

I just got logged out for going to Google momentarily.

The plot thickens.

There seems to be no end to the login fiasco on the forum.  Is there any effort going on at CTT to resolve the many reported errors?

I guess not.

I have noticed that every other website that I have to log into is willing to identify me by the name "lionelsoni"; but CTT wants my full e-mail address.  This was a minor annoyance; but now that the forum logs me out capriciously, it has gotten more tedious.  Whether or not the other problems that I am working around can be fixed, it would be nice to have a shorter log in.  After all, it is certain that our screen names are unique; and I don't see how there could be any security problem.

PS:  It did it again, just as I posted the text above.

Yes, the problem is being worked on. Forum logins are authenticated through the customer database, and this problem is related to another issue. I believe I've had to log in, oh, five or six times in the last week where in the past I could go several months without logging back in. Nobody is happy.
