IIABSDISEI with temps in the very low 20s. Went on a small shopping expedition while paying a bill and came back with zilch. Probably just as well. Finished a possible article for CTT last night and sent it in today. Hopefully I will be submitting more in the near future. Friends will be here soon so I want to wish you all a Happy New Year! Cooked one Monday for breakfast. I do three slices of balogna. Toat, mustard, fried balogna, cheese, fried balogna, fried egg [not runny], balogna, mustard and toast. Now if the balogna is tick sliced, I put the cheese and egg in the middle. Love them.
Morning. No rain. Sun trying to come out. Not going to lake house as planned.

Mornin' boys. Sunny & 30's here in the Mid-Atlantic region. Goin' to dinner with in-laws tonight. Didn't get everything done, as copper tubing was breached as I installed the in-line water filter in the basement. Went in to my Captain Ron mode, and with the aid of Fifepup and youngest princess, was able to patch, then permanently fix the offending line. Water had sprayed all over my display case (thankfully lexan deflected everything), so for the moment all of my Generals are on the pool table. Sailing, if nothing else, has taught me to stay calm and work the problem.

Staying home this year, apparently. GF got sick last night, so no dinner with her brother and his family. I can stay home and "party" solo.....no problem there.
If I stay home, then tomorrow I can work on the roadrunner and install the exhaust and maybe plumb the fuel system. It may fire up in the near future...haha.....
Here at work. Cold and sunny about 30F. Should be 28F at midnight...another reason to stay inside!

Again sorry about missing yesterday. Did not do much on Monday any way. Grandkids were down yesterday, and we got to see the Hobbit as well. Watched 4 more Sherlocks so far. Did house cleaning today for NYE's get together with another couple. Did get February CTT. Excellent issue....again. Made my first practice walk for the Mini. 3.6 miles in 58 minutes, 15 seconds. A good start already and now have to work on distance and speed. Would like to be able to maintain 15 minute mile pace for entire event or maybe even do it in under 3 hours. Spent some time fune tuning Christmas standard gauge layout. So far, I live the new forum software as I can post using IE again and have the fonts work ok. I hope everyone has a good day.

Chief I have no problems with smilies only with spell check I have tried with IE,Firefox, and Chrome which I'm presently am using just clicked smiley and it went where it was supose to
Aloha and Happy New Year Eve's Eve. Back from grocery shopping. I should've gone at my usual time of 0-dark-30 am because it was crazy. Brent, I have always been interested in garden railroading - more the railroading than the gardening. It will be fun to see what you come up with... MikeC, those Sherlock Holmes episodes are outstanding. Jeremy Brett WAS Sherlock. I am appreciating the new versions over BBCA with Benedict Cumberbatch.

Chief, thanks for the good thought. With your hands on expertise on things, I know you could fix it in a New York second. I did get a good samaritan gardenener working next door to look at it. He said the stem below the sprinkler head had been broken off, probably run over by kids playing in the street. He got the old stem out and put in a new one and everything worked fine when tested. However, after he left, I turned the sprinklers on and we were back to square one. The water pressure is still too low but I can't see any water leaks anywhere that would lower it like the initial geyser I had when the sprinkler head blew out. Guess I'll have to wait now until my gardener comes back after new years.
Don, enjoyed your comments on getting started with trains. I have been hearing something in the neighborhood of $2000 for a new big boy. I would love one but am afraid of the fate of these modern engines braking down electronically and then having no place to go with them in the future. These are not toys at that price and should be better built. With regards to the real Big Boy, now in Cheyenne, not much is happening on the so called restoration. Lot of politics going on with the people in charge and a lot of name calling between the old regime and the new one. Hope for a good outcome.

Good Afternoon,
Dennis, I've been watching all the posts regarding the new VL Big Boy as well. Appreciating the excitement that the new owners have, and reliving some of my excitement when I got a few significant items. Will bore you with a couple.
Like most guys my train activity and accumulation went on hold when our son was born, and even ended up dismantling my layout for the nursery. All trains went on shelving in a different room, at least I was able to admire my accumualtion of post war and MPC collection. Then about 15 years later, Kay and Chris decided to get a 2nd Christmas tree for the family room. So they went and bought one. While they were out he found a small train that came with plastic track and was designed to be installed in the tree! It took the better part of a day to get it level and tight. This dumb little train had a steam engine, tender, and caboose. It ran on triple A batteries. The silly thing used mineral oil for smoke, whistled when it started and played Christmas songs! Total cost was $20! After it was up (finally) he asked if we could bring one of the trains from the shelves down and put around the tree. I said SURE! Any you want! So he picked a G Scale General Set I had. Set it up and it lasted a day. The motor had died, the engine was about 25 years old at the time. So decided to get it fixed. I had worked with a guy that had a train shop, so we took it there, (he and I). While we were there he had a Lionel scale Cab Forward running on the track and it had full TMCC in it. This was the first command control train I had ever seen. I was amazed at all the features! Of course he wanted to buy it, I looked at the price ($1300) and said no way! About that time my wife called us on the cell, to see how we were doing, so she talked to him. He told how "cool" this engine was, and she could hear it. So she said why don't you get it? I told her it was too expensive, she kept on, "Its been a LONG time since you have bought any trains, GET IT! Then I told her what all it would require, a new transformer, a command base, remote. Her only comment was SO? I caved and we got it. Brought it home got it put up around the tree, THAT's when I realized how BIG a circle of 72" track was. That train stayed on the floor until March. We all liked it so much, decided we needed to have a room added on to the house for a train room. We started that process, (long story short), after 6 months of planning, selecting contractors, architects, permits, etc.. We were set to start construction, at the last minute the contractor raised the price $30k, that did it! A train room at a cost of over $100k, no way! Cancelled it! With considerable disappointment by all, I came up with an idea for a patio enclosure. Checked into it and we had a room put up on the patio, (16x20) took less than a week, over the counter permit, cost less than $15k, no increase in property taxes. A big go! So that is where my train room came from. Have not regreted ever since.
One other experience, we had joined a train club, (Angel's Gate Hi-Railers, San Pedro). And we needed something command control to use there. By this time I had discovered MTH and DCS, so we opted a MTH PS2 Steam Engine. I called all over, finally the shop in Pasadena said they had one for about $200. So we went there, it turned out to be a PS1 engine. I expressed my displeasure, and the manager said wait a minute, I may have something in the back. He came back out with a Railsounds PS2 Big Boy! Wow was I ever excited! He said price however was $400. The store was quite crowded and everyone that heard and saw the engine, said I'll take if he doesn't! The engine was NEW in the box! I never ever thought I would ever have a Big Boy! It has been a big favorite ever since, turns out it was too good to take to the club. So we got a couple of K-Line TMCC diesels for that.
Finally, the last BIG event was the Lionel Legacy Big Boy, we decided since we HAD O-72 and both Lionel and MTH had scale Big Boys we were in disagreement which one to get. MTH offered an entire train where Lionel offered the Legacy System. Finally Chris won out and we got the Lionel Big Boy. Another exciting time!
Other than that and my 2 trips to York which were unbelievable, I couldn't be happier! I can really see how their is so much excitment regarding the new Big Boy and all its features. I haven't heard anyone on this forum mention they purchased that engine. Most likely due to track compatibility. I have the capability but no available space or budget.

Sun and 20 clear degrees. I don't have a cattle car but I've never been able to get the horses to climb the ramp into the horse car. Yes I have tried every known remedy. I have a second one that came in a Classics train set, never opened it. Still in the set box. Not a scheduled club meet but a party tonight hosted by one of the members.

Gonna work on the bathroom today. A little paint, maybe a little tile, and fix a leaking spigot.
Train question: Has anyone ever used a sheet of cork under the Lionel cattle pen with good results...?

Took my partial in to dentist for third and final time I hope this morning to send to the lab making my crown. Suppose to get it back this afternoon. Hate being toothless.
Went to water the lawn this AM. Turned on sprinklers and one sprinkler head had blown out with water coming out like a geyser therby reducing water pressure on the whole system. Tried to get head back into socket but can't find it with all the mud and water around it. Have to wait until it dries. Gardener could fix it but he's gone until after new years.
Meantime, we might get a shower by Wednesday they say.
My son came home from weekend in San Diego with girl friend last night. Only saw him for about 5 minutes. He was off to work today before I got up. He's not around much anymore when I need help.
My trains have not turned a wheel since Thanksgiving. Need to get out there.
Mornin' FellasGood to see some old faces again!Christmas was a blast this year! Christina was really into it and watching her 'help' Matthew brought back some fond memories of me and my older sister. Ran the trains under the tree for our guests Christmas day and the comments had a common theme "You need to get the new train garden done so you can run more trains." I guess two going in a circle isn't entertaining enough? But TheQ agreed, so I will be working on the new train garden soon... oh and the permanent one will be getting some much needed attention over the next few months. Plan now is to have the permanent train garden wired and functional by June. Have the town setup and wired by August, then start the new Christmas train garden and have it ready by Thanksgiving. This of course is contingent on nothing else falling apart in the house!

We have sun and 29 degrees. Not much going on in my toy train world. A few shows and our monthly club meets. The couch and TV were my compaions yesterday. Lions game(they lost)Avengers, Columbo and a late night chat finished my Sunday.
Mornin' boys. Overcasy & 43 here in the Mid-Atlantic region. Looks like Santa treated everybody good. I finally got to run my new USMRR General, and Fifepup surprised us with a new Dell. Youngest Princess and I then took off to visit my foks in the mountains of WV. Took a couple hours and cut up some fallen pines at the new Fifedom. Alexis, no sooner than I put the car in park, hiked off into the woods. She truly is our nature girl, and loves the property.
Great to see some old faces returning.

Very quiet day. Slept in and went to 11 AM Mass. Had breakfast afterwards and then did Sudoku and word jumble. Took nap. Got up and delivered some items to aunt in town and went to grocery store. Watched some more Sherlock Holmes. This is the Granada (BBC?) series that was done in the 1980s and 1990s. Very faithful to the stories for the most part, but some "interpetations" are made. Also, watched an English Premiere League match on Telemundo as Newcastle beat Everton 3-2. Good football. I hope everyone has a good day.
Aloha. Great - now I have 'Love in Bloom' stuck in my head. Seems like a good Christmas was had by all. As Kev says, winter is slowly returning after a pleasant week. Daughter and SiL went back to MI this morning. Congrats on that wonderful engine, Buckeye. And the family engagement. Jack, Well done at hooking another train fan - you now must move them along to the True Gauge. (I had a 3 x 5 O gauge layout that I folded up and slid behind the couch in our first apartment though come to think of it, the bride certainly preferred the N gauge one). MikeC, are you watching the BBC Sherlock or the new American version?

The family stuck with the script for me and I got the few things I asked for (some clothes, shoes, and consumables ). No flanged wheel items. I have plenty.

Back from the hunting camp. Season ends Jan 1 but will probably not go back. Weather is going bottoms up this afternoon through Mon. night. Wed., Wifey wants to go to the lake house [first time since Oct. 2013]. Go out with neighbors up there.
Saw a big 6 or 8 pointer. Only problem, he was crossing the highway from my open field to my woods about 30 minutes before any day light. Was near my stand but never came by. Rest were big does. Was going to shoot HS Principal one for meat. Problem, would have to have borrowed neighbor's 4 wheeler to get it out. Woods flooded from all the rain and was 30 minutes from dark. Actually I had to wade several times to get to that stand. Will really be bad after the rain on the way.

I wish I could go back in the archives on a couple of posts when LionChief came out. Seems one guy was not at all excited about them. HUMMM Guess a leapord can change his spots after all.
