Brutus - Nice video. That set is VERY nice, saw one in person at the last York show I went to and if I were into the really old trains I would have picked one up for myself, glad you like it.

For those not on FB, I have been working on the kitchen remodel for about a week now. The old pantry is gone, and the soffit above the refrigerator is gone. When I opened the soffit I found 4 power wires that were not routed up into the floor joists, just routed through the soffit. After some discussions with electricians and my BiL (who spoke with his technicians) it was determined that I could cut small channels in the floor joists and tuck the wires through them and cover the opening with wire protection plates. Well I stopped at Lowes last night and bought 20 plates, when I got home I removed the particle board that was used as part of the soffit, cut the channels, and tucked the wires in... just need to stop at Lowes tonight and get 3 more plates then I'll be on to drywall work.

Don - your comment was very well received. I do try to mimic what the pros would do and make it as clean as possible. I did check local code and found what I did would pass an electrical inspection!

I am now really looking forward to getting the drywall patched and spackled. I also want to remove the backsplash from around the main counter top so I can patch that area of the wall as well. Then Monday we go speak with the counter top people (who are going to remove the old counters and install new ones). New cabinets aren't due for 2 - 3 weeks, so from now till then I'll be working on a couple other things in the kitchen, I want to add an outlet above the other window and wire it to the switch that powers the light above our sink (the light will be going away and I'll be installing LED lights above the sink and above the other counter hidden with custom valances), I may also add another switch to power under-cabinet lights (this would be a surprise for TheQ), then it will be on to painting the walls and ceiling, then when I get the shipment notice for the cabinets I'll remove the remaining wall cabinets and paint that wall as well. Also have to figure out when to remove the tile floor...

Mornin' boys.  Overcast & 60 here in the Mid-Atlantic region.  Gotta get laundry done before the weekend.

So, the grandson's 3rd birthday is fast approaching, and since Fifepops had to go to Klein's to pick up another repaired 2.0 engine, Wifey & I took the boy to pick out his present.  After much mullin' over (he wanted them all...), we settled on the Railking PRR Freight set w/LOCO sounds (30-4208-0).  Took it home, and set it up on the living room floor.  I've bought several MTH starter sets over the years, but this one was really put together nice.  The 4-6-0 "Rugged Rails" steamer didn't have the chinchy look or drive mechanism.  It is a solid built, handsome (picture on the box doesn't do it justice) 10-wheeler.  The running gear and wheels are all black, which really gives it a classy look, it smokes like the dickens, and at the highest speed on the controller, doesn't come off the 0-31 oval of track.  The companion cars are a PRR gon w/crates, Gulf chrome tanker, and a PRR caboose with yellow cupola and wire hand grabs.  The realtrax rails have a better appearance to them then past offerings.  The boy waited for me to run it for him, but I gave him the go-ahead,"Your train.  You are the engineer."  He's been a good student, and he put the train through it's paces, and he already understood the direction cycle of 3-rail trains.  He just had the look of satisfaction on his face, as he played with it for 3 hours. Wifey was very impressed and pleased with the purchase.  I'd give this set a score of 5 Star out of 5.  The price was very good as well, thanks Klein's.

Good afternoon all,

Nice review of the Railking starter set and the Christmas at Halloween movie.  There's a point in this hobby, for me at least, when you rediscover conventional operation and realize it's just as exciting, and maybe more so, as running digitally.

Another new found joy is observing children as they play with trains.  At the train show last weekend there were tons of kids enjoying the hobby.  No offense, but it's refreshing to see them interested in the hobby as opposed to a bunch of us old farts.   Most were attracted to G and O, which is understandable, since the other gauges don't really pander to the younger crowd.  Sometimes they're seen at the LHS with parents or grandparents and I get a kick out of it when they pick out O gauge over others.  I watched during one such occasion when a 8-9 year old came into the shop with his grandparents and it became obvious that his interest was 3 rail O.  While I chatted with one of the store clerks the young lad quickly picked out a car, what I assumed must have been a birthday present and brought it to the counter.  Even though he must have been impatient he politely asked if I was in line.  I smiled and told him I could wait and allowed him to pay ( or Grampa ) for his car first.  I couldn't help but reflect on how excited I would have been at his age and how nothing could have stopped me from getting that car home to run on the layout.

I sorta got that feeling again watching Brutus opening his toys.

Nice to hear York talk again.  Wish I could go but have spent many happy times there in the past.

Made it to Pasadena yesterday and got my lawyer started on my living trust.  Big load off my mind.

The President was in our neck of the woods today.  He spoke at Puddingstone Lake which is part of a regional Park about three or four miles from me as the crow flies.  He dedicated part of our local San Gabriel Mountains to be a National Monument.  Hopefully that will qualify it to get some better funding.  Azusa Canyon above me is a mess on the East Fork of the San Gabriel River.  Used to be a good trout stream but over the years has become a dumping ground for a lot of people leaving trash and even used diapers in the river.  I hope they can reclaim this natural asset.

Saw the President speak on TV for about one minute on a minor channel.  TV coverage was lousy.  I mean how often does a President come to our town.  They filled the time with a bunch of other junk somehow.

later,

Ray

Hello There

TGIF!!! Quick check in to say hello. Hope to be dining with some of you at this time next Friday.

Altoona train show is at the Blair County Convention Center on Sunday I'll be there around 9. Hope to greet some old friends.

Leaves are  wierd this year. Some trees just turned brown and dropped their leaves  a couple weeks ago do the the dry September we had. Some greened up again with the recent rains

Planning on servicing Tahoe and packing for York this weekend among other things. Best move on to some of them and head to bed early.

Prayers for those in need

Good evening all,

Thank you all for the warm response back.  I went back and read all the August posts as well.   The outpouring of support was and is overwhelming.   I was just so blown away by what I had learned and the way it was presented to me that I felt like there was no sense in communicating with anybody about anything.  Appears blood sugar issue is under control and blood pressure is headed that way.   Work was quiet today, and all caught up.   Could potentially watch 4 soccer games involving grandkids tomorrow if they win their first round games.   Could be a good day.   So good to see so many posting again.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Evening All,

Haven't posted in awhile, couldn't come up with something meaningful to say.  Haven't really done a lot this week, its kinda funny how Dr appt's can take over your life.  Kay has had only 1 this week, and I had none.  So we've been kinda lost.

Submmbob, Bob the reunion in Tucson was not the Nam Jam, I had never heard of that.  But it was specific to the guys that were at Phan Rang AB.  Been watching their facebook page, looks like they are having a good time.  Facebook can be real time consuming, and almost like having a email chat with people.  Like most social networking, it is very easy to offend someone, or it can consume your life.  You might enjoy checking out facebook, it is interesting for sure.

Kay and I are going to go to a train show/meet tomorrow.  This is one I've never been to before.  It is in Beaumont, Ca.  Which is 1/2 way to Palm Springs from here.  So most likely will go down there as well and maybe stop in a Casino for the heck of it.  Try to remember to take camera along.

Chief's engines are coming along fine,  ran out of popcorn while testing though.

Talk with you all later and Stay Healthy !!

Mornin' boys.  Cool and rainy in the Mid-Atlantic region.  Hope Rich's m/c ride won't be hampered today.  Our O's just didn't have enough last night.  Too many Baltimorons talking smack about KC (creates bad mo-jo).  Need to follow Buck's lead and stay classy.  Glad to read that dbaker & Mrs up and about.  Glad to know the sun still rises over Indiana, too...Smile, Wink & Grin

Don, I've never been to that meet in Beaumont.  Hope it is worth while.  That's pretty far out from L.A.  I only know one train collector in Beaumont and a couple other guys from Redlands.

We had some ground fog this morning  Burning off now around 9:00AM.  I tried to adjust cheap car cover on my old Buick this morning and the thing just tore like paper.  Sun must have weakened it.  I guess you get what you pay for but didn't think I had it on car that long.

Kids are taking me out somewhere tomorrow for my birthday.  Don't know where yet but I'm happy if I don't have to cook it myself.  My grandson has a birthday on the 17th.  He will be 17.  Mine is actually on Monday Oct. 13th.

I haven't joined facebook yet but have been avoiding it.  No time for more chat rooms.  My family is on it though back East.

Don't know how to act today, like you, since this is the first day in a while with no appointments.

Good Evening,

Everything very well here.

Kay and I went to this "Trainfest" in Beaumont/Banning area this morning.  It included a swap meet area and 2 buildings of display layouts.  The advertising for this event was excellent!  It was definitely over sold.  The swap meet had 1 1/2 aisles 30' long.  The first vendor was G scale, and he had a lot of small lights for 50% off.  I have bought these before and they really work well for buildings and stuff around the layout.  Some are grain of wheat, most have mounting fixtures.  As well as being 14 to 16v.  The rest of the swap meet was either HO or N scale.

Both buildings had display layouts, was not any O scale and were pretty much the same ones that are at most of the other events.  Outside was a BBQ, KettleKorn, and a kiddie ride.  That was it.  Took us about 2 hours and that was it.

So we went on down to Palm Springs, Indian Wells, & Cathedral City.  Had a nice ride, didn't do any walking.  (To warm for Kay pushing me in the wheel chair, and wouldn't be good for her.)  But had a good time driving around, then on the way back we stopped at Marengo Indian Casino feed the bandits a little, then had lunch and came home.

Then checked the mail and my new glasses arrived from the VA.  The prescription is great, really makes a difference.  But the frames are not anywhere close to what they should be.  These are round, just like Mr. Magoo's glasses.  The paper work says something about the frames on back order.  So will have to see what that's all about.

Hope everyone is having a great weekend, and Stay Healthy !

Good evening all,

Sometimes a day comes along that makes living both exciting and worthwhile.   The two oldest grandkids from the older daughter had tourneys today.   Both won their first games by 2 goals, 4-2 for the granddaughter and 2-0 for the grandson.   The second games were nail biters as both featured frenzied fantastic finishes.  Th granddaughter's team  won 2-1 with both teams making a PK in the first half and her team scoring on a breakaway in the second.   Her team withstood many frantic attacks in the last five minutes of the second half to secure the win.   In the grandson's game, goals late in the 2nd and 4th quarters were sufficient to lock in the 3-2 win.  All four games were intense.  The granddaughter especially upped her game wonderfully and was mixing it up with the best of them today.   The weather was chilly but dry.   It was a good day to be alive.  I hope everyone has a good day.

That's the VA way of say here's what you get sucker Big Smile live with it. No Don Probably they will send you another pair when your frames do come in. They will make you a good back-up pair when they do thou.

Morning all. Hanging in there. Doing okay. Have appointment at the V.A. on Tuesday seeing Monday is a holiday  there. Then the Next Tuesday they replace my defibrillator in me, Donna all scared me it's just another day. Would just like to get it done and over with.

not a lot going on been working on a custom train had a 2037 that a friend sandblasted for me and decided after about a year now that I think about it to paint it blue wanted something other than black and didn't want a fake pink one. And took A dinning car I messed up back about 2 or 3 years ago trying trying to customize the inside and painted it Blue to match and may take a coach from that set and Paint it blue also when I get these done. I will paint the truck sides and the bottom of the rest of the cars black also as there like a olive green right now what MTH/RailKing was thinking when they did that I have no idea and wonder what they must of been on that day. But the one I have done so far looks great done. Also pics of a before of the bottom of one car and the after of a completed car

Good Morning guys! 59 going to 62 and SUNNY!

I got the Desk top back yesterday and it seems like it is really working nice. I haven't posted in a while because the laptop for some reason posts weird on this forum.

Trying to get caught up on the Pot. Will get back to it later.

AF53 Ray and I will be at York Thursday morning leaving on Saturday. Looking forward to seeing everyone. We have to be back in time for my granddaughter Kali's Christening Saturday, late afternoon.

My son, knick named by you guys, "Johnsson" is doing well at the Police Academy. If fact he enjoys it! I think he bought the program. He has a "Fife Haircut" now! lol

Train wise, I built a portable test bench last week.

Happy B-Day SP Ray, Cake I will talk to Mike Wolf about your engine when I see him at York.

Enjoy the Day!

Good Sunday morning all!

Bright and sunny here today. Will probably spend the day winterizing the back yard. It's been raining a lot lately and I can't risk putting the stuff away wet, so today is it.

Went to John's house yesterday for our train meet and we solved the worlds problems.

SPRay - Happy Birthday and many more! Cake

Our club meet was last night on a really nice layout. You know where to find the video.

Mornin' Fellas

Had a nice visit with my little sister and BiL this past weekend. The kiddos apparently really like their uncle (he is a kid at heart) but the verdict is still out on whether the kids or Uncle Ed had more fun. Got the rest of wire protection plates installed in the kitchen remodel and got most of the drywall up. Had 2 pieces of green board left over from the bathroom remodel, so I used those in the corner where the pantry used to be. Amazing those two pieces at 4' x 28 to 34 inches were heavier than the 5' sections of regular drywall I put above them to the ceiling. Have to remove two sections of drywall that I installed where the soffit was because I forgot to install the ceiling section first, then the wall section. No biggie because I have enough left over from the corner to finish the soffit remodel. Hope to be spackling tonight or tomorrow. Meeting with the counter top people tonight.

Hello all

Quiet night here on the mountain. Had some high winds earlier, but it is calm now.

Managed to fix an old radio alarm that I use at home. Since it went down I have been using my cell phone as an alarm. I'll be cancelling the cell phone this week and just using the new land line so I had to come up w/ something:)

Found a few parts to put together a #60 trolley for a fairly reasonable deal. Body is toast, but I guess they had some problems w/ the plastic overheating. Thinking about coming up w/ something of my own. Should be interesting.

Meetings and Dr's follow up today.

Was suppose to be misting rain all day like yesterday [which wasn't suppose to happen].  Sun is out right now and has been since sun rise. ???

Aloha, looks like a rainy week. Hope it dries out by the end of the week as I have a major (for me) outdoor project: replacing my lousy mailbox and post. I did clear most of the deck furniture and grill away for the season - at least everything I could do myself. I'll need help with a few items - I dismantle and rebuild all the furniture every year. Seems to work.

Drove up to Minneapolis on Sat to visit my brother and his wife who moved there a few months ago. They aren't settled in yet and miss their former posting in Denver desperately. It was only about 6 and 1/2 hours each way. I had never been to the city so enjoyed taking one of their light rail trams to the big mall. Got back in time to watch the end of the Bears game. Nice win.

Awesome video, Gut.
