Install the smoke unit and piston with the boiler casting upside down. The large U shaped part of the shaft contacts the bottom of the piston, and the ends fit in the slots in the bottom of the boiler casting with the longer bent end facing the boilers' left side (when the boiler is upright).

1947 Lionel smoke unit piston crankshaft installation
Posted by Nobles1 on Tuesday, July 29, 2014 10:42 PM
I am attempting to rebuild a 1947 Lionel 2025 locomotive and with a little research have been able to get it running again. But I have one problem, the smoke piston crankshaft (Lionel part #695-13) was loose inside the locomotive shell before I disassembled the unit. I cannot figure how this crankshaft in installed to operate the puffing piston. Any clues on how to properly install this crankshaft would be greatly appreciated.
