Postwar Lionel 2466 Tender- Identification and Parts

There are 3 variations of the 2466 being 2466T, 2466W, & 2466WX.  There should be a stamp on the bottom of the tender marking it one of these variations.  The 2466T has no whistle, but shares the same shell as the 2466W, which neither have any kind of nickel handrail.  The 2466wx has a nickel handrail, differentiating it from the other two shells.  The W and WX chassis are both whistle tenders, and the trucks will have roller pickups, and wires from the roller, to indicate they are the whistle variety.  If you have a chassis without the roller pickups, then you have the plain jane version 2466T.  All of these tenders came with coil couplers.  If you do have a whistle tender chassis, and want to restore it, you will need the WS-125 whistle and associated nuts/screws for attaching to frame, and hopefully the accompanying WSR-1 relay, for whistle control.  Have more questions about it, ask.

 The easiest way to obtain the whistle assembly would be to go to a local train swap meet and try and find a similar junker tender, possibly with a bad shell, missing trucks, etc. You also could scour online auctions for the same thing. The whistle assembly is part # WS-125 for your tender, and the relay is WSR-1. They are available here, if you cannot get a junker. Here is a parts view of the whistle. Don't forget screws, washers, etc.

I have been in ownership for some years now of a Lionel #1666 Prairie-type steam locomotive and its matching #2466 whistling tender. The actual whistle unit had been removed from the shell many years ago and rock ballast had been put in its place to substitute for the lost weight. I am inquiring about the possibility of acquiring a new whistle unit and possible methods of acquisition. Additionally, I am aware that there are two variations of the 2466, the 2466W and 2466WX. Are there any important distinctions between the two, and how might I identify which one I own?
