Hi My name is Anthony. I just purchased (new never used) a lionel model 18823 C&IM diesel engine made in 1992. The train runs great but i cannot seem to get the horn to work. The transformer i am uaing is the old lionel zw from the 50's. All my postwar tenders work great when i move the horn lever forward. I am thinking that this newer style engine uses eletronic board. Is there a different transformer that i need Thank you
It's been awhile since I've worked with older locos but I think polarity is an issue with your horn. The ZW puts out a DC voltage for the old tender whistles to operate. They didn't care about polarity but your diesel does. Try reversing the two wires that come from your ZW to your track. That should get the right polarity to your diesel and your tender whistles should still work.
Good luck!
