have there been any articles on installing LED lights on AC powered toy trains?

I don't know about articles, you can do a search of the forum and one of the back issues of CTT.  If its a direct replacement of standard bulbs there are LED's  sold that look like a regular bulb and screw, or lock, into a standard bulb socket.  There are a couple of companies selling these that advertise in CTT, usually the smaller ads toward the back.  One thing though they give a "bluer" light than a normal bulb.

The search function is on the right: "Search our Community."  .  I selected "In ToyTrain operating and collecting."  Then typed in your search words " AC LED lights.  BTW.....welcome back, jockellis!
