When you say it quit, do you mean the loco stopped running or the sounds stopped?
When you train stopped running, did you hear the transformer click or get warm? If so, you have an electrical short someplace either in the track or the trains.
In general for anything that has sat around for a long time unused, it is a good idea to do some maintenance. Getting some PLASTIC SAFE hobby lubricant is a good idea. If you have a hobby shop near by, you can get a pack with a variety of lubricants, which over time you will use.
Your loco has plastic gears, which do need to be lubricated. The motor may need cleaning too, which is a liitle more complicated.
Here's a web site that is very good and will help you greatly:
http://www.thortrains.net/
If you scroll down the page, not too far down you'll see a topic "SPECIAL - Basic O / O27 Manual - How to set up and run trains, accessories, etc." This will give you a basic primer on these trains.
There's also layout ideas and loads of other info.
First off, how does your track look? Hopefully no rust. To give it a nice general cleaning, you can try spraying some WD40 on to a rag and wiping down the rails with this. Use one of those 3M type scouring pads to scrub it (not steelwool) Let that set overnight, and the next day wipe it down good to get as much of the oil off as you can. If the track is real loose when it is put together, then you can take a pair of neednose pliers and "crimp" the rails within 1/2 inch of where each piece joins.
Also, check your local library. Mine happens to have a copy of the Greenburg Lionel Service Manual... a very helpful book and although your specific loco isn't listed in the book, there are others that are very close and will give you a good idea how to take apart the loco and get it back together with minimal frustration.
Keiffy, you don't say whether you are looking to set up and run the trains (being their from your Dad, I heartily recommend this path) or find out what they're worth to sell. Let us know.
Before you do anything... even trying to set them up, do this first! Unscrew the shell off the C&O tender which attaches to the steam locomotive. You'll see a speaker inside with a circuit board. Check that foam under the circuit board. I would advise replacinging it immediately as it disintegrates over time. They just do, be the type of foam or the glue used.
If you run the loco and the board comes in contact with the sheet metal frame of the tender, you will destroy the circuit board. Even a piece of cardboard with some masking tape will work just to keep something between the circuit board and the tender frame. I know a few people who have ruined a Sound of Steam loco with a board that probably still worked before they accidentally fried it by not knowing what I'm telling you/
If you want to set up some trains and have some fun, this is the right place to ask questions. What you have there is EXACTLY the kinds of trains I run. On first glace at a current Lionel catalog, this hobby appears expensive. Trust me, it CAN be done on a budget so long as you can live with the compromises of that. And it can still be fun too. A great family hobby too.
027 but the track width is the same so your train would run on any three rail track brand.
