Anyone remember or know about the time when the GM&O Rebel had a headon collision
with a GM&O freight train back in the 1950's near New Albany,Mississippi?
My Grandaddy (Charlie Pugh out of New Albany.Miss) was the engineer on the freight train that day. I was pretty young,maybe 7 or 8. It basically destroyed the Rebel's engine and mail car, and killed the mail guy. Grandad and his fireman,ole Price, jumped from their engine seconds before the impact and were not seriously injured. The freight engine was hardly damaged.

There was the Lionel 1700E (with reverse unit) and the 1700 (without reverse unit, and, I believe, uncatalogued). The 1700 does not have the red nose, and runs in one direction only. Not sure about the years of production for the 1700.

There is nothing stamped in the bottom but this came from an elderly American woman who lived in The Hague, Netherlands and was given to a boy of 12, where I used to 'babysit' his brothers (1+3). He didn't care for modeltrains and gave it to me. This was back in 1981.
Curious to know if the 1700 cars are stamped made in usa on the bottoms. Lionel did this with export pieces in the prewar era. If not it probably migrated there with an original buyer. Its late 1936 production with the Lionel Jr. nameplate and chrome "L" emblem. In that shape it would bring around 200 USD. Not a rare or valuable train, but attractive and a great example of 1930's styling. The prototype for the Lionel 1700E was the "Rebel"which operated on the GM&O and was designed by Otto Kuhler.

This is my other set, complete with tracks and a couple switches, a crossing and some small things like uncoupler and 'endtrack'
How old is this and does it have a name or number? I believe the locomotive used to be orange but this is the way I got it. I got it as a 'souvenir' when we visited family in Canada in 1973. We were there for 3 weeks and after that we were asked what kind of souvernir we wanted. My sisters wanted some Indian arts but I wanted the trainset which was boxed up on the attic....
Yes, the American Flyer is in S guage. the locomotive is an "Atlantic". The cab number is 21160
All I found out, is that the American Flyer engine is S gage, and identified as a 300 series engine with a five digit cab number, 21160.
No, just got the train, no boxes and whatsoever. I do have tracks but that is for my other Lionel set. For a transformer I use a Märklin transformer as because of we have 220 Volts over here; an original 110V won't work.
So just the train, how much will that be worth? (insurance wants to know)

Complete and in excellent condition, with all boxes, track, transformer, accessories & manuals, and a set box, you are looking in the range of a new Polar Express set. Higher, of course in LN condition.

Wow!! Looks like a keeper to me. I'm sure it's worth a lot more than I could pay. You might check out some ot the online auction houses or old train sites.
