I always used the old brown lionel trestles for 027, they worked well with that plastic thing at the top that locks the 2 tracks together. Not used any other. Heights scare my engineers.

Man that is one cool loop of track there.

Frank,

Great job building that trestle.  I think I now have an idea how to add an upper level to my layout!!

Thank You Frank! That last picture showed me what I wanted to know. Again, that's one nice trestle. I hope mine turns out as well...

For some reason, I don't have any photos of the top bracing.

I put a "bent" beneath each tubular tie. I ran a straight quarter inch square section from bent to bent and cut and sanded these to fit to make a joint. Once these were all placed and the trestle was positioned, I glued extra wood ties to the bridge. I also glued wood ties in place inside the open frame of the Lionel metal tie. Once all the glue had dried, I screwed through the metal ties into the wood ties to hold the track firmly to the bridge. This bridge is incredibly strong as I place my weight on it when climbing down from the train table and use it as a "grab handle" when climbing up.

I shot a quick photo of how it is attached for you:

Frank,

That is outstanding! Two questions, both of which I can't quite tell from the pictures:

1. Did you built a deck to go under the track or not?

2. Because your trestles are on a curve, did you come up with a formula for what angle to cut the cross braces, did you sand them to fit, or just use 90 degree's and leave a gap?

I'm getting close to where I need to build a curved trestle using the Grand Central Gems pieces from Scenic Express, and am not quite sure of the degree I will need to cut the pieces, especially the deck.

Not to hi-jack,

It's already been hi-jacked from trestles to what does PW stand for. I tried giving some feedback to the original posters subject.

how's that ceiling work for track sound deading?

Just ok - a little louder than I would like it to be.

Lionel PW - Post War era (but you knew that right? Big Smile )

Perhaps Bob's point is that if PW stands for "Postwar" with such certainty,"  how does  one specify  "Prewar?"

I believe he has raised this issue previously in this forum, which might account for his use of the fancy word.

Of course, which war remains ambiguous....

Build your own:

This is all made from quarter square lengths available at Home Depot. $0.69 for a three foot length.

After building one support, I made a jig by banging thin nails into the workbench and built the others from that pattern.

I placed these without support and used weights on teh track to hold them in place. Once all were square, I put in all of the cross members while the bridge was standing in place.

You can do this in a couple of nights work, if this is suitable to your needs.

... as I am pertinacious...;-)

I had to stop and look that one up....  One is never too old to expand one's vocabulary...

Oh, and add K-Line to the list, although the new K-Lionel branded box will cost you @ twice as much as before, if memory serves...

"PW" always strikes me as being as ambiguous as I am pertinacious...;-)

 Trestles Options for Tube Track?

I'm curious what the various trestle options are, about their merits and how they compare etc. This would be for O31 or O27 track. Options I can think of include:
Marx
Lionel PW
Modern Lionel
Other (MTH?)

 thanks
