"Lionel trains are the standard of the world" - Jousha Lionel Cowen
I'll take DMU's portion of lima beans...He took the time to help me out by looking it up.
p.s. I'm a vegetarian..........so I like lima beans.
Wow! Thanks for the info DMUinCT, good stuff.
I think prewar trains are very nice and special in a nostelgic kinda way. Thats all I need to do...start collecting all the era's of lionel.
Looking it up in the Catalog: (1923 to 1942)
The "O-27 gauge" version of the Pennsy Torpedo enterd the market in 1936 as #1688 a 2-4-2 in gray (the catalog shows it in brown?). In 1937 the catalog proclaimed "New Six-Wheeled Drivers", it was now #1668, a 2-6-2. From 1939 to the end of production in 1941 shows it as a 2-6-2 in black.
The "O gauge" #607 short passenger cars were first cataloged in 1926 and ran untill 1937 in various paint.
Both the locomotives and the cars were used in lots of un-cataloged sets and as single sale items. They do look good togeather!

Cool!
Thanks for the info. I wonder if someone in the family still has it. Since I have memories of it and all.
That's a Pennsylvania RR "Torpedo", either 1668 (2-4-2) or 1688 (2-6-2). Gunmetal gray versions were cataloged about 1937-38.
I suspect Keith (1688torpedo) might have something to add.
I was wondering if anybody knows what the grey engine is called? It is pulling the blue passanger cars on page 69 (top) of the new ctt issue? What year and no. etc....?
I used to play with that engine on my paps dresser when I was a kid. I forgot about it until I saw that picture. I used to think it was funny looking or broken because of the flat top and no smoke stack!
