Seeing toy trains for the first time

Do you remember the first time you saw toy trains operating? I got to experience this through my 8-year-old my nephew a couple of weeks ago.

My parents visited and brought my nephew, Louis, along for the ride. It's more than a two-hour trip, which, to a child that age is "forever." Our circle of three-rail track, leftover from Christmas, was still up in our dining room. Louis noticed it immediately and started asking my husband questions. I soon realized that he had probably never seen a toy train before!

Louis waving his hand near the smoke as the locomotive nears.
Uncle Jim fired up a train, and the questions continued. Louis was fascinated with the amount of smoke the locomotive generated and would wave his hand over the smokestack to make the smoke move.

I quietly took some photos, not wanting to interrupt the moment. Louis crawled around the dining room to follow the train's path. I swear I nearly saw stars in his eyes!

Here it comes!

About a week later, my sister called to tell me a funny story. My nephew had a friend visit and they were talking. My sister overheard him bragging about his uncle's train that "ran around his whole house!"

This is one happy boy!
