I'm trying  to repair old Lionel boxes and want to know the best way to reattach flaps that have come off.

I'm not sure how original you want them to be but you might try stamp hinges. They are small thin adhesive strips used by some stamp collectors to put stamps into books.

Most stores sell strapping tape.

The most durable has nylon filaments running the length.

Extra strong has filaments length and width.

There also almost invisible tape.

Place the tape inside the box.

Cover the total flap and go one inch inside the box.

If you do not care about seeing some tape.

Extend the tape just a pit more. Then fold it over the edge of the flap. This keeps the flap edges from puckering.

Check over on the Classic Toy Trains Forum; a lot of the guys over there have a bunch  of knowledge about things like that and would be more than willing to help out.
