IC's Cairo Bridge
Posted by richhotrain on Thursday, November 1, 2012 11:19 AM

OK, I admit it.  I am a bridge nut.  I have truss bridges, bascule bridges, and a soon to be lift bridge on my layout.

I just received the Winter 2012 issue of Classic Trains magazine, and as usual the issue is terrific.

There is an 8-page spread on the huge system of bridges over the Ohio River at the southern tip of Illinois, complete with a host of photos.

If you like bridges, take a look at this article.

I couldn't agree with you more, Rich. I would have paid a king's ransom to be there to witness the old spans as they were "launched" into the Ohio River! What a marvel of engineering and logistics to be able to replace each span within a 20 hour window and resume operations with barely a glitch.

Another fine issue indeed! I happen to live in the Chardon, Ohio area and the article by Jim Shaughnessy about the B&O's Lake branch is of particular interest. I witnessed the rails being pulled up in 1982.
