Hi,

the photo was published in "Iron Horses of the Santa Fe Trail", p. 213. The text there reads: "Brand new at Topeka in 1904, No. 979 weighs in before commencing her official service life with the company. ..."

Best wishes, Helmut

Baldwin Locomotive Works.

Elegant concept. Never had any acquaintance in any media with that thing or the idea of ganging hi- and lo- pressure cylinders. Oh the fun of valve settings with a single valve gear for each side of the eng.

This isn't, I hope, a photo-shop joke?

More photos from my collection. The date on this photo of AT&SF 979 2-10-2 is August 18, 1917. I saw this same locomotive in some Stan Kistler photos from the 40s.

Any idea where this photo was taken?
