More photos from my collection. The date on this photo of AT&SF 979 2-10-2 is August 18, 1917. I saw this same locomotive in some Stan Kistler photos from the 40s.

Elegant concept. Never had any acquaintance in any media with that thing or the idea of ganging hi- and lo- pressure cylinders. Oh the fun of valve settings with a single valve gear for each side of the eng.

the photo was published in "Iron Horses of the Santa Fe Trail", p. 213. The text there reads: "Brand new at Topeka in 1904, No. 979 weighs in before commencing her official service life with the company. ..."
