My Great Uncle who worked for the New York Central and later Penn Central said the change took place before he hired on with them,But the rumor was that it was a change of the tax laws and the incorperation of the Michigan Centrat and the P&LE Railroad under the New York Central But dont quapte me CNW FOREVER Larry
Comparing the entries in the Guide prior to being a 'System", each part was treated as a separate line; there was a section for the Big Four Line, The Boston and Albany Line, Michigan Central Line, Nickle Plate Line, West Shore Line, etc.
Other lines were sort of that way, too. But there was a trend to "only one ticket" to ride the whole system.
My 1938 Guide shows an 'integrated' New York Central: a System instead of a bunch of lines controlled at the top by an interlocking board of directors.
Just my opinion.

Haven't a clue!! Maybe the same reason some companies changed their names from Brand X Railroad to Brand X railway when there was a corporate reorganization or some sort of buy out.

That 1935 date sounds pretty good. My January 1930 Official Guide shows The New York Central Lines and the February 1938 Guide shows The New York Central System, Don't have anything in between.

In the book, "New York Central System Gone But Not Forgotten", by H.F.Cavanaugh, published by N.J. International, Inc, in 1983, "On July 1, 1935,the New York Central Lines became known as the New York Central System."
I haven't had time to check some of my other NYC books, but I have a vague recollection that steam engine tenders on the lines like the Big Four and Michigan Central were lettered New York Central System. I'll see if I can find that caption later this week.
