Amtrak service is disrupted by a NS 20 hopper car derailment north of Baltimore - no injuries and no estimate of when it will be cleaned up
Amtrak suspends service between DC and Philadelphia for the weekend after a freight train derailed (msn.com)
From what has been posted at other sites. This derailment happened at or just off the north end of the Bush River movable bridge (swing?)? No conclusions about damages until someone can provide an aerial of the derailment. If bridge damage ahades of UP at Phoenix.
Thie accident just makes the need of imediate directed service be able to get by Federal law. That especially now with what is happening in the Ukraine.
The CSX parllel route must be acailable in an emergency in the future, with NS (if an NS derailment) paying the user fee.

Parallell is not equal. There would be a serious grade involved in moving a NS train UP the connection between the Port Road and CSX at the CSX Control Point of West Aikin. Additionally that connection has not been used for a number of years if not decades.
Never too old to have a happy childhood!

For amtrak?
There's no wires on that route.
It's been fun. But it isn't much fun anymore. Signing off for now.
The opinions expressed here represent my own and not those of my employer, any other railroad, company, or person.t fun any

blue streak 1Of corse not . But some regional trains can be transferred around any closure by diesel. There should be planned detour routes for any blockage from WASH - Newark Penn. NYP = New Haven no detour route but New Haven - Bos is possible,
So send a train on a long, winding detour fighting for space (and crews) among freights vs. tossing people on a bus and blast them up 95?
This is an amusing conversation for me, I live minutes from where it happened.
The CSX connection to the Port Road/Perryville wye is abandoned. And even if it was servicable, it would involve a carefull backing move on a sharp curve with a steep grade to get a North bound train back over to the AMTRAK mainline at the Perryville wye.
I did not try to drive down to the crash site, but all reports put the derailment on dry land just northeast of the Bush River Bridge, in Perryman, just south of Aberdeen, which these days is a fixed bridge. It once had a small draw span, has not been opened in decades to my knowledge.
BUT, the ex PRR/AMTRAK mainline in that area was once 4 tracks, now three, widely spaced. Note sure from multiple videos how much damage.
And I did not see any wires on the ground........
I have not been in downtown Havre de Grace yesterday or today to take note of any trains......
I suspect they will have little trouble getting this running as soon as they have the junk out of the way......

Exactly. At the location in question, AMTRAK, CSX, US40 and I95 all parallel each other in a corridor barely two miles wide. There are many spots along this part of US40 where you can watch CSX trains on one side, and AMTRAK/NS trains on the other, at the same time.
But the two rail lines are not connected and the CSX route is single track today..... once double track - about 60 years ago........
Found more pictures, yes, kind of a mess, but no wires down that I can see.

Wheels take a beating but that is not a typical failure. I look forward to finding out more of what caused such a catastopic failure. And is this one of a kind or a first of more to come? Yike's! At least it stacked the cars up in a small area and NO passing trains were in the area.

Picture will be of a very damaged wheel tread - damage that was not 'caused' by the derailment but that when it failed caused the derailment.

You KNOW it was a Chinese wheel? - or are you just throwing shade?
Road by the site yesterday, two tracks open, third still under repair, but looks nearly complete.
