Amtrak lifting mask requirement?
Posted by CMStPnP on Sunday, February 27, 2022 7:31 PM

Anyone hear anything about this?    I would guess by Summer if current COVID-19 trends continue.    Though I wonder if they will also get rid of social distancing or not as that has to be cutting into revenue as well.

The current Federal mask mandate runs through March 18. If not extended Amtrak , airlines, bus and transit operators will be free to end mask requirements then.

Amtrak may hesitate beause it has a lot of passengers whose immune systems do not work well.  In an ideal world Amtrak could ask persons to wear a mask if the person near them request you to wear a mask.  But that would never work.

New Omicron cases are going down faster in the US than other locations. The deaths are still up but based on number of serious cases maybe that will plunge in 1 - 2 weeks?  As long as a new variant does not appear then masks may become optional?

The wild card is of course Ukraine and unintended consequences.  Amtrak ridership might plunge or go out of sight.
