Amtrak San Joaquin 1974

"Stop the Train" on page 40 of the December issue brought back memories of California in the 1970s.

At the rear of the train pictured on page 40 and 41 is a Southern Pacific articulated coach from one of the early Daylights.  Amtrak leased and later bought a handful of "tomato can" coaches including at least one articulated pair.

The other photo shows a train led by a pair of FP7s.  Despite the markings, SP 6461 has really been Amtrak 123 since August of 1972, when the 14 FP7s (and some F7Bs) went from SP to Amtrak ownership.  Often found working with leased SP SDP45s before the SDP40Fs showed up, the FP7s worked all of the SP routes plus the San Joaquin. Way at the back on that train is some sort of Santa Fe heavyweight, easily spotted by the channel side sill.
