charlie hebdo Sure there were some snarky comments but mostly in response to his rudeness. Many folks gave him some suggestions of how he might be more successful in presenting his ideas but he got defensive and rejected all critiques. He repeatedly posted his letters, suggesting we were merely the last way station on his road to rejection after rejection.

charlie I see that you are indeed an M.B.A. (master of baseless allegations) and you have amigos of the same ilk. Again I say to you all, I am reactive not proactive. I came on this forum(s) to make you folks aware of the dangerous hiring and training practices which have resulted in loss of life. Being the 'new guy on the block' my observations were met with skepticism and snide comments. I reacted. I treat folks with respect and expect to be treated that way in kind. That did not happen here amongst those of you with the 'forum mentality' (read clique). Scroll back in this thread and you will find evidence of that which I state.
Amtrak is an accident waiting to happen and sadly it is just a matter of time until the next one.
SD70DudeSo I guess it's ok to be offensive to old people if you yourself are old?
I took a shower today. Hope I'm not too offensive?

Pretty nasty non-response to a genuinely nice guy (Johnny Deggesty). You should be ashamed and apologize to him. He intended no malice toward you.
You cannot actually respond to the substance of what anyone says and if it seems critical (as most comments seem to you) you attack. You've more than said your piece on here. Many of us listened and even offered constructive criticism. But all you could do is reject and attack. Zugmann is right. You just want a podium (change that to soapbox) with a bunch of yes men, like Trump.

Deggesty 243129 Deggesty 243129 charlie hebdo 243129: Your attacks on the training of engineers with Amtrak by logical extension would include the training of many engineers on the freight lines. True and also deficient? That's a pretty broad brush of condemning most engineers, certainly those with less than 40 years' experience. If not, how does the training on the freight lines differ? I speak only of that which I know and that is Amtrak. I have the impression that everyone who has been following this thread is well aware of the scope of your knowledge and your ability to present it to other people. I am hoping that sometime soon you will realize the futility in contiuing to harp on the fact that Amtrak will not listen to you and then cease complaining to the people who have the privilege of using Kalmbach's forums.

Euclid That was my point.
I don't think it was.
zugmannBut just as you don't think someone should have the right to demand a people should stop making their case, you have no right to tell others to buzz off.
EuclidHe presented his ideas here for discussion, and they were greeted here with a lot of hostile rejection. And now you say it is wrong for him to reiterate and defend his ideas because the people here who mostly reject his ideas have already heard them. I would say that if people don’t want to hear his ideas restated, maybe they should just buzz off. Why should he have to accept a bunch of snarky put-down as being legitimate refutation of his ideas? There are people coming and going here all the time. Some of them will post and some will not. Some are listening to the arguments and evaluating the merits. What give you the right to demand that a person making his case here should stop just because you have already heard it?
Sorry, but that is all bullfeathers.
He was the one that started being hostile by attacking people left and right (and correcting grammar - because, you know, that's how you win wars!) because they(we) didn't immediately accept all his opinions as facts just because he has xx number of years of engine service. But just as you don't think someone should have the right to demand a people should stop making their case, you have no right to tell others to buzz off.
He doesn't want a discussion. He wants a podium.

But when appropriate responses are presented to him, he responds with questions about their credentials and/or snarling responses. We know he was a engineer with no accidents and was trained the old fashioned way. We have agreed that Amtrak has safety culture issues that neither he nor we can change. We know that Amtrak is not receptive to change. Perhaps 243129 can state in a point by point fashion what he would like members of the forum to do to achieve the goals he would like to accomplish.

Deggesty Quoting 243129 "The #188 and #501 disasters pretty much define Amtrak's training, hiring and supervision inadequacies. However with the circus in D.C. masquerading as an administration gaining a platform to publicize said inadequacies is virtually impossible." You have told us this, and we are all aware of your thought and your agony on the matter.

It is heartening that you empathize with my cause.
Euclid charlie hebdo Your attacks on the training of engineers with Amtrak by logical extension would include the training of many engineers on the freight lines. Why would that be a logical extension? Their only connection is that they all are engineers. But training is a result of the individual business cultures of many private sector railroads and one government run railroad. If one is deficient in training engineers, why should all the other companys' engineers be deficient in training?

Someone else (BALT?) pointed out that some Amtrak engineers come over from the freight rails for better working conditions.

There are always platforms available to publicize issues like this one with Amtrak. But this amounts to marketing and that is never easy. The first thing I see is that Amtrak is not the market for your message. They are are the problem subject of your message. They have created the problem, so they will be the last ones to be willing to see that they have created it and want to fix it.
The market for your message is the traveling public, the public sector, passenger rail advocacy, and the political arena in general. You could self-publish a book on your topic and target these market segments. Basically, you would just be doing more of what you have been doing, but with a more developed message and a broader target market. People will read your book and their general reaction will either validate you ideas or not. If you make your ideas clear and convincing to that market, it will put pressure on Amtrak to make changes.

Perhaps model railroading would be less stressful than ranting about Amtrak. Joe's whole life was running trains. When he retired in 2014 after ~55 years (some on the NH and Penn Central, those paragons of great operation?) he had nothing left. So since then, for the past four years he's been ranting about the terrible training on Amtrak and how he has a secret plan for deliverance. He has nothing. I would love to know what really happened in his alleged meeting with Amtrak higher-ups. We only have his story. My hunch is they quickly realized he had nothing at all beyond:"AMTRAK BAD! I HAVE PLAN!" End of "meeting." There will be no pi$$ing match with you. You have called me names, made baseless allegations and launched many insults to and about me. All that can be done from safe environs of the internet. When confronted for proof of your allegations you ignore and 'run' a la 'Agent Orange'. Your actions/words are proof enough of your lack of character.

Simply factual observations based on YOUR actions and writings and a little research. You can't respond on a factual level so you respond with your projections and bizarre, often contrafactual comments.

Euclid BaltACD Euclid Is a 30-year study of rail accidents a good indicator for a looming crisis of safety? What we know about the 501 crash alone seems to be a better indicator with its revelation of Amtrak’s compromising safety by rushing the promotion of a new train. Amtrak did not set the dates or times that the new route would be open for training nor did Amtrak set the start date for operation on the new route - Washington State DOT did. Amtrak did not push back and state to WSDOT that time allowed for training was inadequate and would present issues to the project. Amtrak trapped itself in it's 'Can Do' attitude and it would comply with the schedule WSDOT set. Yes, Amtrak let their "Can Do" attitude overrule their responsibility toward the safety of their passengers. Was this a one-time blunder or the start of a new direction?
