Much to the contrary. Amtrak has successfully operated the NEC through every blizzard that has hit the northeast in the past 3 decades. There have been occasions when they've been the only thing still moving. Outside of the NEC, they are at the mercy of the host road. CSX tends to shut down early and often when it snows, but less so in recent years. NS tend to attempt operation always. The Crescent has run every day through the storms this year, for example.
Don you are absolutely correct. Sunday AMTRAK operated everything they planned and for the most part Was - NYP on time except 1600 - 1730 departures that were 1:45 late. PHL - Harrisburg both ways 15 -30 minutes late with some on time. I suspect that the ACELAs being AC traction were used and they have operated all ACELAs so far today. The NEC regional trains have also operated so far yesterday and today with not too many delays. I suspect that the cancellations were due to not having an AEM-7AC available.. They may have not be able to get them on the NYP - BOS line. It will be interesting to see how AMTRAK handles the new storm this weekend
.You hit CSX on the head. Wonder if WAS - Selma, NC will be clear for tomorow?
OT -- What is the CSX the freight situation?
CSX
Another storm heading east, with another 12" on top of the base!!

WED: Amtrak appears to have operated all the trains today that they posted last night. There are actually a larger number cancelled for tomorrow. A check of the AMTRAK train status page seems that the Regional trains operated a little bit better than the ACELAs. Don't know the reason for many ACELAs over 1 hr late. Several ACELAs left on time and the Regionals that left after the ACELAs actually beat the regionals to NYP or WASH. Anyone know if AMTRAK placed more than one motor on the Regionals and LD trains to help make schedule? about half of the Regionals arrived within 15 min of schedule.
The changes in the NEC schedule appear to be more related to a projected lower passenger count, considering that many offices would be closed, or people would not try to get to work in a blizzard. The government office in DC are projected to be closed again, so not only the workers, but anyone having business at those offices won't be making the trip.
The NEC is not closed down, or no trains would be getting through.
Outside the NEC, Amtrak is at the mercy of the host railroad.
Friday's schedule has all Acelas operating and a little over half Regionals operating. About 1/3 Acelas Business class sold out and 1/2 Regionals in coach classs. MARC only operating Penn line on "S" schedule and also VRE. AMTRAK Richmond service full schedule but not complete east and south of their. Auto Trrain not operating. Probably everyone has cancelled who wants to drive to/from Lorton. Cresent and Lynchburg operating.
