I see this whole thread started with my 70th Birthday Ridewithmehenry trip...we've had 24 exciting and unusual trips since and we're ready for the 72nd Birthday trip...nine days late, but, celebrate I must!  Have found Philadelphia very senior friendly with a dollar ride on the trains and free on trolleys, buses, trackless trolleys, and subways.  So next Wed the 24th we will take the 8:43AM from Colmar, PA on the Doylestown Line after leaving Binghamton by car before 6AM then will be riding the trolleys out of the 40th St. tunnel to Darby and elsewhere south of the MF subway line.   A two buck day for us old farts with four from Bingo in my car, two meeting us in Colmar, and one from NJ and a guide from Phila meeting us at 30th St station.  Last three trips have been to Phila so July will be Montauk, LI we hope, Aug possibley to CT via Amtrak from NYP and back via MNRR.  Sept possibly NYC subways or all NJT, not sure.  Oct. similar group to ours will be riding the DL&W lines of NJT and we will join them for part of the day...lots more trips ahead....lots more planning to do!

RIDEWITHMEHENRY is the name for our almost monthly day of riding trains and transit in either the NYCity or Philadelphia areas including all commuter lines, Amtrak, subways, light rail and trolleys, bus and ferries when warranted. No fees, just let us know you want to join the ride and pay your fares. Ask to be on our email list or find us on FB as RIDEWITHMEHENRY (all caps) to get descriptions of each outing.

Thank you all for the remembering and welcoming me back.  Firelock, one of the reasons I picked that picture is that I know it was taken at my hometown station, aside from schools, one of two important buildings which were my homes away from home.

Several have gotten to me recently asking my whereabouts.  I was a bad boy about a year ago, suspended for 30 days, got busy with lots of things including my monthly Ridewithmehenry trips in and around NY Metro and now Phila (contact me if you're interested in being on my mailing list for upcoming trips...I don't get anything and you are reponsible for your train and other fares).  I went through my 2500 slides and sold them; I still am part time selling radio advertising and doing some agency work; I am (too) involved with Facebook pages; I have made a 17 page pdf list of my collection which is for sale (ridewithmehenry@hotmail.com for a copy if interested) and will probably get another 5 pages out over the next month or so; have had a few minor health problems but am battling back.  It will be interesting to see how well I do back here now...am looking forward to it.  Thanks, all, for your concern and inquiries....

I second that greeting!    It's a shame a real activist fan like Hank was pushed out of here.  The Forum's loss.

Oh, our trains are all airconditioned...and commuter speeds can be up to 80, even 90, in some places on the Corridor, especaily in Conneticuit under Metro North Railroad operations.  We've also got some neat light rail operations in New Jersey and modern cars operating on ancient trackage in Philadelphia area.  So, depending what you want to see, what you want to experience, and where you want to go, I think we can provide you with a good railfan ride or two.

Happy B-day Henry, although a little late.

I dunno yet, but maybe I'll be going to NY (to meet my bosses) between July and September. As an european railfan who loves american trains (aAlco might get some credit ofr it lol), I would like to sample some US rail passenger services, wich might be quite common to every american (NYP-BOS, or NYP-ALB, or NYP-WAS for instance), but I would like to do it with somebody who knows the place well. Maybe when I get some more details it would be nice to do a trip-get together with some US fans.

Anyway, I've got a Google drive folder where I'm always putting the PDF schedules I'm finding in the net. If you wish, as 'a present', a can give you access

Mario...thank you!   While we mostly concentrate on the commuter and regional lines, with enough notice ahead of time we may be able to work something out for you....even using commuter lines for some of the distances...to see as much as possible.  But be prepared for culture shock...a step back a couple of decades in passenger rail compared to what you are used to!

H

Hello again Henry ;

As promised, I'm giving you access to my 'train schedules' drive. I'm always 'upgrading' it with new stuff every time I find something. Also I've got a little present : my country's ETTs (it's a bunch of PDF's) that I'm sending you via mail.

As for the 'time warp' in terms of trains, I'm fully aware of it. A friend of mine, wich has her boyfriend studying in SF's bay area was recently there and she had to commute daily. Her impressions were precisely that, old trains, a little slow, but then, over here in Europe we're some sort of soiled children with air conditioned trains and a very frequent service. I'm also aware of that because some years ago here in Lisbon, in the South side of the river we had a suburban train operation that required a river crossing just like Okaland - San Francisco, and then a diet of loco hauled commuter trains, mostly veteran Alco RSCs and 'metalised' or Budd cars dating from the 40s. It was very fun but quite outdated, and even the opeation of the line, wich was partially double track used a telephonic train order system. That line has suffered a 'quantum leap', and nowadays it's completely electrified, and tottally double tracked , except for a short 3 mile section in the end.

Anyway, judging by what I know from videos and other info, the NEC, at least, looks uite european, and with the exception of Arrow II EMUs, rolling stock is not all that different from what its in everyday use here. and off course here in europe our commuter trains don't reach 100, 110 or 125 Mph, because there's no need for that (normally a suburban EMU here has top speeds between 75 and 87 Mph, you'll see that in the PDF schedules).

Thanks, Schlimm....What is amazing is that each ride is a new adventure no matter how many time we've done them before...there are always new landmarks  and old ones that were missed, new people joining us and those we meet on the way.  We relax and enjoy...wish more could join us more often!

These trips are designed for fun; ride lines you wouldn't ordinarily ride; some are historic (like this one being the early rail route from NYC to Boston and where the first piggy back was done); not a tourist train but real railroad operations, making connections, etc.;  railroad and non railroad scenery; believe it or not, it is liesurley and relaxing.

The Ridewithmehenry 70th Birthday Celebration trip this Saturday has  three of us from Binghamton, two from Dansville, PA, one from Palmerton, PA and at least one from Hackensack, NJ, possibly one from Denville to NYP only  for Ridewithmehenry's 70th Birthday ride!  That means room for one or two more in my car from Binghamton (leave Kirkwood no later than 4:45AM!) then rendezvous  at the Park and Ride at the Del. Water Gap,  NJT lv Denville 7:12AM, ar NYP 8:39AM.  LV LIRR 9:12AM, arrive Greenport 12:02PM, got menus so we can order ahead at the Sterlington Deli, see the LIRR HS museum and/or the Whaling Museum, watch the Shelter Island Ferries scurry.  LV 1:11P back to NYP by 3:49P, LV NJT at 4:11P, Ar Denville 5:42P. Probably dinner at Carmines in Netcong by 6:30P.
NJT fare: Adult RT $28. OFF $12.50, LIRR Adult $54, OFF $27.  [OFF=Old Fart Fare].

Hope you can make it and if we need another car out of Binghamton, all the better!!!

We've been doing Ridewithmehenry journeys almost monthly this past year...so, even coming up to 70 I think we can swing about 60 or more in the next 5 or more years...one is sure to fit anyone's schedule...we'll even work toward adapting to other's schedules!  Give us a trip idea and a date and we'll work on it...couple things to remember: several of us have to drive 2-3 hours to get to a railhead at Port Jervis or some other NJT station Denville and west; not all schedules with match up with other schedules; weekdays have more choices and services but weekends have some unique schedules.

Your birtday or mine?  I don't do that many or that good at pictures...others do.  But if you are talking July, I hope that means we can get together and do a trip...although hot and humid in the city, especially aboard the subways, are not reccommened as being good for one's safety.

Where and when....Ridewithmehenry will have a July trip and maybe you can join us....have a few subway surface lines in Brooklyn and Queens to tie up or all of the Bronx is undone...or maybe you'd like something other: we can do that, too!.
