Only a minor scorch mark was visible after they put the fire out, as seen in this pacing photo of mine taken as the train limped back from Chippewa Falls (just below the second N in "Union"):

They did shut the 949 down for the rest of that run as a precaution, and since it was leading they were restricted to 20mph back to Altoona. The problem must have been minor though, as the locomotive was back up and running again by the time the next run out of Altoona took place (an hour or so later). Like Ed said, it didn't appear to be major at all. I wasn't sure though when a crew member first came on the radio and said that there was a fire on the side of the 949, but I was glad to see it was confined to only a small mark.

(Oh and by the way, the incident occurred on the first of two runs that day, one to C.F. and another to Elk Mound).
