CN HR616s
Posted by Boomer Red on Thursday, June 7, 2007 1:03 AM
I know that National Railway Equipment has some of CNs HR616 units sitting in one of it's lots but I can't understand why it would buy them. I have heard many railroaders say that these units performed horribly and that CN was glad to be rid of them. Could there really be any resale value for these clunkers?

CN got rid of them 9 years ago. Does NRE still have them ?

Perhaps the trucks are useful ?

NRE does still have them, but most of anything that NRE buys (besides the select stuff for lease) gets scrapped. The longer they sit, the more money they will get once its time to cash in all of the steel.

Even though they were'nt the best performing engines it would still be nice if one made it back to Canada to be preserved. These were the first cowl body "draper taper" types on CN and in my own opinion the most attractive type. I grew up near Moncton NB and really miss all those wonderfully smoky MLWs.
