It would be my grandpa's railroad, the Erie.

Actually I have an office window looking at the Erie in Bergen County, NJ. Plenty of Transit trains.

Also have a soft spot for the Delaware and Hudson and the Chicago & North Western

N&W. I rode a train from Cincinatti to Norfolk in 1958. It was pulled by a J. We met those huge Ys pulling coal drags. I was too poor to own a camera then.

The (pre-privatization) Japan National Railways.

They chopped it up, sold it off and confused the issue totally!

For U.S. rails, make mine the pre-Stuart Sanders N&W.

For me its the Denver & Rio Grande Western, Long Live the Grande!!! There was no other railroad as truly as amazing as the Rio Grande: Mineline Thru the Rockies!

My second favorite is the Southern Pacific and C&NW.

1. Milwaukee Road

2. Spokane, Portland & Seattle

3. Seattle, Lakeshore & Eastern (Gotta love it.  Seattle to 3 miles past North Bend, about 34 miles total, and then SLS&E went Broke.)

Rock Island! *two of my essays from my sophmore year in college (small 12 pagers' each) were over its liquidation, one of the worst occurences in railroading history in my mind*

My favorites are these five railroads:

East Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia Railroad

Alabama and Chattanooga Railroad

 Cincinnati Southern Railway

Western and Atlantic Railroad of the State of Georgia

Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis Railway

OK, here's my list:

Rock Island

Penn Central (NYC, PRR)

Missouri Pacific

Had some great railroading moments with these railroads as a kid growing up, so these stand out for me...
