Palooka, hey Joe, let me try to open the reasoning behind the diesel power gen's AC, convert it to DC, then make it AC to provide power to the AC moto.rs geared to the driving wheels.

Replicating the AC's cycles-per-second commands the motors. At train starting speed, the amount of diesel energy required to provide starting cycles per second is related to modulating the AC' cycles per second.

Feeding an amount of regulated KW's/HP of AC thru a DC system which converts the DC into a regulated, portionable amount of AC cycles for the motors.....

A way to allow an AC motor to accommodate the incoming cycles-per-second    is to chop ,electronically the generated AC

the motors geared to the driver

AC Locomotives

Am a new member, retired EE from the military aircraft world. I have read conflicting articles on the propulsion mode of AC locomotives. I expected that AC locos would have the power directly applied to the (AC) motors. Yet, I have read that the AC input is rectified (converted to DC). Would someone provide a verbal block diagram of an AC loco's propulsion?
