What would you think if you found out that NS was going to paint some new ES44ACs in heritage paint schemes?  What would you think if you found out there were to be 27 of them, all different?

18 or 27, it doesn't matter. Either way it is great. NS needs a little color - the more the better!

Have to love rumors.

Saw schemes for 18 of them.  Other 9 on list.  Looking like more than a rumor at this point.  It's to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the NW-SOU merger...Although nothing's a sure bet until the paint's dry.

Kind of explains the SOU Green GP59 getting painted black recently.

I can remember 23 of them for sure.  I'm probably whiffing on some obvious ones...Will get the others on Friday...

6.CR (not "Quality" - with white sill stripe)

I would add N&W passenger colors (tuscan red with gold lettering) and the NKP Bluebird colors (the freight power was black with lots of yellow striping).

The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

Turns out the list I was looking at got pared to 18 and bit and spread to EMD's as well.  Check out today's RR news...

Not too sure why New Haven made the list (other than they were part of PC).  NS doesn't turn a wheel on any ex-NH rail.  CNJ would have been a better choice.

How about PC, though?  Really dull and well hated in it's day.  Is there any PC anything preserved as such anywhere?

The 4610 was painted black with the OLS scheme. Not sure what that has to do with NS heritage? I would like to see NS do this though, I think it would be cool to see a modern engine wearing the CofG (my territory), like anything else I believe it when I see it.

NS forgot to include the Illinois Terminal (ITC) in it's proposed heritage fleet that was acquired by N&W in 1981.

Even though a local shortline called Respondek  recently painted a GP10 in ITC-inspired colors.

Same would go for NYC, no?  CSX got the lion's share of ex-NYC trackage.

Doubtful CSX will do anything like this.  None of their top guys are "men who love trains"...

It'll be black with white logo.  It would be cool if they'd do the red and white PC, though.

And, thankfully, the CR unit will be the pre-Quality scheme.

There  seems to be a modicum of confusion on the number of "Heritage Engines" to be fielded by NS. [Please refer to the 2nd paragraph of the following article]

According to TRAINSNewswire of 02/17/2012:

"Norfolk Southern heritage units won't get special road numbers"

[Published: February 17, 2012]

NORFOLK, Va. — "Norfolk Southern has no plans to use special road numbers for the 18 heritage units detailed on yesterday's News Wire. With only 10 SD70ACes on order, their road numbers will be NS 1065-1074, while eight ES44ACs will be selected from the 25 units currently on order that will be numbered NS 8091-8115."

"All 35 locomotives are scheduled for delivery this spring. TRAINS will report more information about the program as it comes available."

As  Don (oltmand) said (paraphrasing); "this thing may be subject to change at any time", but I would defer to the magazine's staff. They seem to have the inside track on information on this project....
As we have all read and seen the list as published and copied earlier in Forum Threads. Thirty-five units seems to be the highest number mentioned so far.

Personally, with that many units running, I can (hopefully!) see them eventually in interchange service, and subject to showing up about anywhere on the North American Rail System.  Just imagine a group photographic opportunity similar to what UP did on their roll-out presentation....Bow

I wonder what not definite yet for New Haven means?

Unsure if they have the necessary rights (Or perhaps working to secure permission from MTA, which I would assume would own the necessary copyrights and trademarks if anyone does), or  perhaps they're still debating which paint scheme to select to represent the New Haven (The other notations in parentheses were paint scheme selections)?

I hope they go with their earlier green with gold trim paintscheme (Did it have a name?). I'm not certain if this paintscheme has been seen since the last New Haven locomotive wearing it was scrapped or repainted (Perhaps that DL109 that hung around for several years as a stationary power plant until Penn Central scrapped it was the last?), where as the McGinnis scheme has been well used with just a relatively short period where it disappeared before being resurrected in the 80's.

What ever happened to that nutcase that trademarked the PRR's Keystone logo and copyrighted Pennsylvania Railroad back in the mid 1990's (Despite both apparantly still belonging with the corporate remains of the Penn Central) to try to get money from model manufacturers and such?

If NS were to paint a locomotive in the South Carolina Canal and Railroad colors.  Yes I am talking about the Best Friend of Charleston.  Which Southern paint style are they going to do?  Th F & E units style or like 1401 & 4501.

This is a great idea and I had no idea they had so many branches on the family tree.  Lots of fallen flags under their umbrella.

Now I hope BNSF does heritage units and I can see my beloved Frisco rolling once again.

The significant cost is the difference in cost between the standard NS black and white and the heritage scheme. This might be up to tens of thousands of dollars, but is offset by the publicity gained by the heritage schemes.

You bet!  NS seems to want as much public support and good publicity as it can manage in order to get the Crescent Corridor funded.

EMD and GE used to give you 3 colors for "free".  More were extra  - a few thousand each, I think.  Doing a multitude of schemes is going to be even more as painting and styling diagrams have to be done for each, plus cutting stencils and doing the masking and having to change colors after each locomotive.  

According to the news, some are going to get painted in Juniata and Chattanooga by NS.
