When did the Milwaukee Road discontinue steam locomotives on the Morning and Afternoon Hiawathas?
Because they bought EMD #15 - An 'AA' pair of E6A units that could double the daily mileage output in the Chicago-Twin Cities fast passenger pool. As an example, the 15 would leave WB with the Fast Mail to the Twin Cities and double back EB a couple of hours later with the EB Morning Hiawatha.for Chicago. This dayin/day out performance impressed the Milwaukee Road management.
After WWII, the Milwaukee purchased 5 AA sets of EMD E7's and 2 AA sets of FM 'Erie Builts' to completely dieselize the fast passenger pool.

The E6 pair started running one-way on a Hiawatha in 1941, returning overnight; dunno if the DL109 pair did the same. But that was all there was, so some Hiawathas had to stick with steam until the E7s arrived circa 1946.
