Probably California as they only allow machinery that complies with the new tier II emissions rules to enter the state. That's also why most of the heritage units spend a lot of time there (not 1995 so much. after he got into a minor wreck, Proviso's been edgy about letting him roam outside ex-CNW territory much)

I don't think that's true. There are plenty of older units in California. Heck, BNSF is sick with Dash-9s around here. Plus, it's not like they swap engines at the border.

I would assume that the GEVOs will run system wide just like the current ones.

That shade of Yellow is what's known as clean, not faded.

8531 behind it (which if the internet isn't lying to me is an SD90AC (H-Mac)) Is just faded and dirty.

I ran UP 7818 the other day and I was pretty impressed. It didn't have near the vibration as the older model GE's have but I guess it will once it get's some miles on it. Also I noticed the number boards seem to be lit with LED's.  

Oh yeah, and the air conditioner didn't work!!!

Maybe they just never bothered to put the operating fluid (Freon or whatever) in the AC unit?

I like the extra large radiators on the new GEs, it balances the engine out more.

Nothing like the factory shine (which doesn't last very long in a working environment) on a brand new locomotive. Now I wonder if the new EMDs and GEs have a "new locomotive" smell in the cabs......

Eh...they are ok... I think the hood after the cab looks like is built out of lego's. Not that crazy about the appearance of the GEVO's

By and large, you are going to see a lot more new engines in CA and particularly So Cal.  There are different measurements that have to be met by the railroads....and somewhere there is a giant spreadsheet measuring which locomotives smoked how much in what areas.   That is why the gensets are arriving in So Cal, to arrive at a lower average pollution ratio than the rest of CA.

Well, actually, the Gensets are going to SoCal and Texas, because SoCal and Texas are providing subsidies to the railroads for purchasing them.

If you railfan in Houston, it's not hard to find a Genset. In fact it's almost harder to find a place that doesn't use them. Around the port areas they are everywhere. The 2 largest UP yards use them as does the BNSF yard. Only Lloyd Yard north of Houston in Spring seems to still be using older engines. The Gensets are almost scary quiet compared to the others. You just don't hear the engine rumble from far off like you do other engines. I've also seen lots of other newer UP engines coming through with fresh paint jobs so I don't really think it's mostly limited to California.
